If we just want game 7 drama, why don't we make every series 1 game? Then you get all the drama you want and "the best of baseball"

Maybe they played in a tougher division and are even better than the record indicates

When the concept originally came out I was against it. In reality though it's a blast. It creates game seven type drama as others have said, while also hurting the WC team as they just finished a game with all hands on deck, only to have to play more games in like a day or two.

Get rid of the divisions; they are phony constructions.
Top 4 make the playoffs; maybe 5 and 4/5 can do a 1 game playoff if people like that.

It gives more teams a shot at the last wild card spot. More meaningful regular season games for teams in the chase.

Indeeed- and the unbalanced schedules should be dumped as well

I hate the small sample size of it, but the games and atmospheres have been awesome. Plus I don't think there's been an instance where a vastly inferior team has won the one game and advanced (like was possible last night). I don't love it but I think the excitement around it has helped the sport. Now if they can fix having playoff games at 1 pm on a weekday

Same. You didn't win the division. You're lucky to even be in the playoffs.
In 2015 the NL central had the 3 teams with the best records in the entire MLB.....

It was made to give a disadvantage to the WC team and a reward for winning the division. Having to start your ace in the WC game and then likely only getting to throw them one time in the 5 game alds is a huge disadvantage. The game 7 feel and more meaning regular season were just extra bonuses.

1 Game wild card is awful
why?
Think of it more as an extension of the regular season. The goal for that game isn't for the better team to win, they should have separated themselves in the regular season. It's a second chance they're given and for people to be entertained.
It does hurt the team who wins immensely often in the next round. You put your best pitcher in a do or die situation, then are unable to use that pitcher in the next series early. I know the Yankees pitcher only went 1/3 of an inning last night, but for example 2 years ago Dallas beat up on the Yankees then only was able to start Game 3 of the ALDS.

As a Pirates fan I hate it strictly because of a few years ago when the Cards, Pirates, and Cubs finished 1, 2, 3 in the regular season and their reward for having that record in that division was going up against a red hot Arrietta.
I think they whooped the other NL division winners in the season series too.

I like it. Baseball is a LONG season and, particularly this year, many of the division races were decided months before the end of the season. By the time we started Sept. it was a done deal that LA, Houston, Washington, Cleveland, were going to be the division winners. The two wildcard formats gives fans of other teams a reason to remain interested all the way until the end (most years).
Sure, it may seem a bit unfair to have 162 games essentially come down to one game. But the other way of looking at it is those 2 teams shouldn't otherwise be in the playoffs (even though there are many times the WC team has a better record than one or more of the division winners). Therefore, it's more of a play-in game vs. the beginning of the playoffs.
Perfect? No. And I can understand why some don't like it. However, the format still allows the 6 division winners the opportunity to play series as opposed to just one winner take all game.
Admittedly, I don't follow MLB that closely throughout the regular season. But for pure drama and excitement, I think the MLB playoffs are the best of any American sport. It's not drawn out over 2.5 months with over half the league in the playoffs (like the NBA). We get important games all week (unlike the NFL which only plays on the weekends) and everything in condensed into one month

First of all, no that's not why it was made. It was made because there were actual ties at the end of the season so they had one game tiebreakers to see who made the playoffs. People liked the drama so they came up with a way to do it every year even when there wasn't a tie.
Second, you shouldn't be punished for being the wildcard team. The wild card often has a better record than at least one of the division winners so why should they be punished? Winning your division doesn't really mean shite besides saying you're the best team in that division. The division winner already gets home field. That's enough advantage.
If you feel like you need to put a disadvantage in for the wildcard team, then you probably shouldn't even have the wildcard team in the playoffs to begin with.

They are giving you a whopping two additional exciting games in exchange for completely compromising how you determine a champion. Sounds great! Sign me up!

How has having the WC game negatively impacted who has won the title since they instituted it?
Posted on 10/4/17 at 10:03 am to ShaneTheLegLechler
It has prevented teams with better records from even being in the playoffs. You can make the argument that "those teams weren't going to win anyways" but you never know unless they play.
It's also disadvantaged the wildcard team that does make it as said earlier.

The Astros may have beaten the Royals the year they won it all if Dallas got to pitch twice instead of only in Game 3.

Should be wc game is a 3 game series with no off days

In 10 games only once has a team with more than a one game lead over the second wild card won. I suspect you're a fan of that team and that's why you're butt hurt.
I don't understand how disadvantaging a wildcard team is a bad thing. The Astros choked away the AL West in 2015 and had to start Keuchel in the WC game because of it, which likely cost them the series vs the Royals. Completely fair. The Royals won 95 games that year and deserved that type of advantage. Home field in MLB really isn't that big of a deal
