Older Remington 1100 info

My father in law gave me a remington 1100 a few years back and I'm looking for some information on it. The only markings I see is the letters R and U stamped on the left side of the barrel near the receiver and a serial number of L479284V on the receiver itself. Any idea what year this thing was made?

Google "Remington shotgun serial number" and you'll likely find a reference. If I had to guess, 1984

We took our 1100s (late 70s and early 80s models) to Argentina dove hunting in 2003. When we got there the outfitter told us to leave them at the lodge and that he would give us Berettas to use at no charge. Because the 1100s would jam after a couple of hours.
We took him up on the Berettas. But they jammed. We had our 1100s in the field with us. So we switched to them. We ended up shooting them for the majority of the 5 days. My father and I killed 8,000 birds with them. The bird boys cleaned them after every hunt and they did great.
The members of our party who shot the lodge issued Berettas dealt with way more breakdowns and jams than we did. I'm not saying that is normal, but it was our experience.
The 1100s from that era are awesome guns. Enjoy yours.

That's an awesome story (not being sarcastic). Some of my company owners own a dove lodge in Argentina, and I think that's what they shoot as well. My direct boss is a competitive sporting clays shooter and has been shooting a newer customized 1100 for the past couple years.
Should I go ahead and shoot this 1100 or keep it in the safe? I shoot a browning maxus, but tbh the 1100 shoulders really nicely. It hasn't been fired In probably 30 years if I had to guess.

Shoot it. 1100's are awesome shotguns. Just don't shoot steel through it if the barrel is fixed full choke.
Otherwise, shoot and enjoy it. They're extremely reliable and soft shooting.

The Barrel is a fixed full choke and states 2 3/4 or shorter.. I sear he'd it on the Google and the RU on the barrel is supposed to be for November of 1971.

Shoot that gun. Fine China is for eating on. Guns are for shooting. Fish are for catching. Women are for... you get the idea.

cool. The old fixed full guns tend to shoot buckshot very well if that's your thing.

Mine will shoot good shells all day. But only good for about 5 Estate steel. Dirty mother frickers.

Depending on how long it's been sitting up, it could need gas seals (o-rings) replaced. It's "routine maintenance" on the 1100's.

Stumbled over this a while back and thought it was cool as shite. Back when DuPont owned Remington and they probably made some of the best sporting guns ever.

Got an 1100 on XMAS day when I was 15, only shotgun I've ever owned, 30" full choke, split that barrel in Maurepas swamp 1969.
Replaced with a 28" modified, I sometimes had a problem with it jamming but not often, that gun has been thru hell.

I can't ever remember mine jamming, and I have used it for duck hunting and skeet shooting since I got it from my dad at 16. He used it for the same since he was a teenager.
Awesome gun. My favorite shotgun I've ever shot. Mine is a mod 28" barrel

I'll check on getting some new seals. The barrel is short, like 22" so I'm not sure what it would be useful for.

That sounds exactly like my dad’s 1100. About the same age and barrel length. He won it in a raffle before I was born, and I don’t think he ever really found much use for it. We used to shoot clays with it sometimes.

My 1960's model 1100 3" Magnum 30" full choke barrel is a buckshot throwing beast. Bought a 28" barrel with choke tube when steel shot became law. Duck killing machine. Keep it clean. Change o rings to Viton material and don't forget to clean gas port, which is small hole located under barrel lug. Lug is round piece attached to barrel which slides over magazine. My 1100 shoots softer than my Maxxus...

Had my 1100 given to me in the early 1960's. It has a serial number of some sort on the receiver, M470816V. The barrel has a large W followed by smaller LV+2. Barrel is mod 28". I have an extra barrel somewhere around here. I don't know the meaning of these stamped letters.
