I have my Dad's old 1100, made in either 70 or 71. Good old gun, has only jammed once due to needing a good cleaning.

Got an 1100 on XMAS day when I was 15, only shotgun I've ever owned, 30" full choke, split that barrel in Maurepas swamp 1969. Replaced with a 28" modified,
Got mine for Xmas when I was 14. 28" modified. Shot many squirrels, rabbits, and birds with it, and cleaned it with WD-40. We thought that was proper care back then. Never had a hiccup.
It sat in the closet for 20 years. When I took it to the range, it worked like a champ.

Just a follow up on this. Someone gave me a new barrel from a newer Remington 1100 barrel from a competition model. The barrel is stamped "2.75 Target Loads Only". Does anyone know if it would be safe to shoot 2.75 steel shot duck loads out of this barrel? None of the really high FPS stuff, but maybe something that is advertised at 1250 fps?

I got a 1187 in 1987 and have put tens of thousands of rounds through it.
A few years back I took into a shop to get a price on bluing the barrel and while I was there the guy said "let me clean this gun and replace the o-ring".
Took him maybe 30 minutes. We took it outside and it cycled shells like I could not believe. If you have an old 1100 or 1187 it is worth it to change the old o-ring and actually clean in the receiver housing. Like this guy did in this video LINK
To this day that 1187 is my duck gun.
The new ones from Wal Mart just aren't as good.

When Winchester had to replace my barrel due to some faulty loads, I sent them the Magnum barrel that came with my gun the one they sent me back was stamped as a 2 3/4" competition. Didn't even notice it at first, because they knew it was a 3" Magnum they we're replacing. I've shot 3" duck loads out of it for two seasons now.
