It's a dangerous pass play and why use it if guice is breaking 10+ yard runs and etling is dropping dimes 20 yards down the field?

We are not playing Chattanooga every game.

Dude, it's week 2 and they've played 2 games that were well in hand after the 1 1/2 quarters. Why do you think they should dig deep in to the play book and give more film to the SEC opponents coming up in the schedule?

I am just having a tough time placing a "slant" as a play deep in the play book. Our offense is in trouble, if that is our surprise play.

Most offenses use crossing/ slants and we don't. Just curious

Jacoby Stevens caught a first down ball on a crossing route. It's like you people don't watch the games. Also slants are more of a M2M route and we've seen a lot of zone in the first 2 weeks.

The sideline throws are farther obviously but a lot of throws between defenders require a lot of velocity.

So. Depends on the throw

Our passing has been the reason for our losses for many years now. Just thought maybe we would take a new approach. Now I was curious about why we aren't taking a new approach.
So the offense looks like it did under Les Miles to you?

BOOM! Exactly.

Also, the passes everyone is screaming for are interception prone. Teams like Florida and Bama will stack the box and take away the deep pass. That's when a crafty coach will break tendencies and hit them underneath. Will we? IDK. But we'll find out.

In the mean time see the quote above.

Shouldn't we try a few in a real game situation to work out the kinks? I'm not saying open the whole playbook but just a few to make sure everyone is on the same page.

I think going even back to last year that his deep balls aren't actually underthrown, he's just late recognizing and gets the ball out a half second late.
Agree 100%. You can see him see it, but he'll hesitate.

Slants usually utilize picks and rubs and multiple clearing routes. It's not like Madden where every receiver runs a damn slant. There's more to a simple slant play than you think. Also, when were they in a position, in either game, where they needed to run quick slants? The running game has been working, slants are intended to substitute when the run game is being stifled to try and make the LBs hesitate. There's a lot more that goes into a slant than you think. It's a situational play call. LSU has not needed to use them or any other plays across the middle, so why do it? There's more scheming that goes into short to mid range passes then deep routes. That's why you don't see them.

I think DE played well overall. Good enough to beat the opponent in front of him and the team. Ball placement will need work to beat good to great defenses though. Hopefully it comes and the season progresses, but it definitely has to improve. Several passes were placed very well, but usually when the WR has created great separation.

No knock on DE because that's not his fault the DB's couldn't keep up. But when we face DB's that can keep up, he can't be as late or underthrow as many passes. If he hits Jacoby Stevens earlier on that crossing route early in the game, then he has time to turn up field instead of momentum carrying him out of bounds to ensure he makes the catch. Last week and this week WR's on deep routes had to slow down and wait on the ball when they had a 5 yard lead or better on the DB.

I think these can improve and they will have to if we want to get over this hump that's been plaguing us for several years. Overall good game and glad to have the win.

I agree for the most part. I just feel that Chattanooga is a good opponent to prep for the tougher games. The run game will not beat Alabama or Auburn, I promise.

We attempted what looked like a post about 15 -20 yds downfield and Etling missed the reciever (Chark, I believe). Led him too much and high

I remember this play...That play is the exact reason why this needs to be worked on in a game. At some point we will have to make several of those types of throws when it's 3rd & long.

It looks like you don't. It takes considerably more arm strength to throw intermediate passes on a rope than it does to simply chunk it up and air one out on the deep ball.

We don't do intermediates because Danny can't fire a missile in there.

answer your question, why do we need to throw short intermediate routes when we'll just run it for 5-7 yards a carry?

That pop pass to the TE last week will be used more vs state. Etling tends to look deep and to the sidelines. He plays it safe a lot. But I believe Canada didn't want to show some of those type pass plays yet. Scouting report will be don't get beat deep and cover the out routes. And of course stop the run. I believe play action will open the middle of the field n a big way vs state cuz we don't throw over the middle much and the lbers will crash the middle on PA.

The answer is in the game plan. Dominate where the defense gives you.

Last week BYU kept 2 safeties back and did not crowd the run. We abused them in the run game.

This week Chat crowded the box so we bombed them over the top.

At some point...perhaps next week...definitely against Bama...we will encounter a team that can leave safeties back AND slow down our run. At that point we will have to exploit the middle of the field.

Can we? Who knows. There is certainly no reason to do that when you don't have to. That would be dumb.

Here is what we know so far: Versus the teams we have played we have successfully deployed our new game plan offense...exploiting the openings for great offensive output. There is no reason to lay past issues on this team. New coach and new OC.

I just watch great offenses each week use the middle of the field routinely and they don't treat it as a top secret mission. The fact that we still treat basics as extraordinary plays, is what is concerning. Even Tom Brady mentioned last week, that the in game experiences with timing is crucial in perfecting the passing game.
