And one of the few times they did stack the box is when etling hit chark for the long gain
Assuming this was a "read" by Ettling and not a play call from the box, this gives me great hope for the season.

BYU had a shite gameplan. Just seemed like they were scared.

While I agree with most of the sentiment in this thread, nothing I saw makes me think this offense will work against Bama. Bama doesn't give a shite about jet sweeps, they run em down in their sleep.
We are going to HAVE to move the ball thru the air v Bama and I would like to see the guy that will rely on get more than 15 attempts a game.
Yeah we looked good, but BYU sucks man and they never adjusted either.
I wouldn't put to much into this game

A) there's enough to build on
B) there's enough to think we will indeed build on it and adjust accordingly.

BYU did try it. We had a 50+ yard pass play on the one play they tried it.

For last 10 years everyone knew what to expect from LSU. When the team lined up, everyone in the building knew what was coming. Les confirmed it by saying he actually played to teams strengths in order to break them.
Canada purposely does pre snap last minute shifts and motion to disrupt the defense's initial reads which gives little to no time for them to adjust. He took the FB out of the backfield which forces a defender out of the interior of the box.
And that is not even getting into the tempo aspect. Very few teams have horses needed to keep up with an up tempo attack.

BYU didn't trust their DBs at all SEC teams will be able to play man outside and put more in the box
My impression was that oddly enough, their soft stance was somewhat related to fearing the runs that don't come straight at them.

I think we ran more counters Saturday than I saw in the last 5 years.

Did they bring the safeties up on that play? Or did the safeties just bite on their own?
Everybody could see that play coming

and it wasnt just that they knew we were running the ball, they knew which gaps we would attack, without misdirection.
we ran a bunch Saturday but we attacked a different gap every time.

Yeah, they were scared because they didn't have the athletes to cover the sweep as well as the WRs. Most SEC defenses do have those guys.

why would you think a byu gameplan would beat Bama?
we were able to beat Byu without putting our passing tendencies on film. that's always a plus.

We ran several "u-pick" running plays with what amounted to glorified zone blocking leaving Guice to pick his spot.
It was beautiful.

Which was dumb. I guarantee sec oppponents will stack the box until we prove we can beat it. I have no idea why byu did not.
Because we kept the passing and outside run threat real.

Can I just point out that Bama, on offense, is vaguely reminiscent of LSU circa 2010? Their QB can't pass and we embarrassed that QB last year. I firmly expect the same this year.
This offense doesn't need to go Clemson on Bama, it just needs to not be dead on arrival.

Etling stated in the post-game interview that BYU was playing us "soft" and daring us to run, so we did.

I love counters when you have TE/FB/F-back in motion because you can adjust on the fly where that block will hit the point of attack, sometimes get better angles, and use that same blocker as runner/reciever later.
One thing it does is cause hesitation in the LBs. A FB coming from the backfield to block is easier to read, easier to jam up (if you try to slip him out to be a receiver), and if the D is willing to risk it just key off him.
Yes, Les/Cam used the FB as a decoy. But the ratio of decoy to point-of-attack blocker was very small. Teams like Bama and AU would just key on the FB and we never out numbered them at the hole. AU just got blowed up often.
With Canada the fear of doing that will prevent it many times. Plus it's harder to see where he's going if in motion parallel to the LoS as opposed to running at the LoS from a static position.

Was LSU playing Bama last Saturday?
Is it remotely possible that LSU has other plays to run?
Could it be that the LSU staff just might have other options for Bama?
Is Bama the only other team on the LSU schedule?
Do you look under your bed before you go to sleep to see if Nick Saban is lurking there?

And though we had 470 yds of offense, we only really had one big play and that was from the passing game.
There was a 52 yd pass and a 32 yd pass and numerous mid-range pass completions as well as 8 completions for 1st downs.

What's funny is, if I'm a Bama fan today, I might be having the SAME discussion reference LSU.
I mean, it ain't like they moved the ball on us.
A perfectly reasonable assessment of Saturday's events is that the defense that stoned Hurts looks like it can stone him again and Hurts looks like the same can't throw QB.
Meanwhile, it looks at least possible that LSU will be bringing a slightly different offensive party to the table.
A perfectly reasonable assessment is that at least after 1 game, Bama shouldn't be taking the LSU game to the bank yet.
