McQueen had to stuff his coolness into 50 years of living...while Newman got to stretch his out to 83. No telling how much more cool stuff McQueen might have cranked out, had he not died so young.

Don't forget:
But I've got to go with Steve McQueen even though I generally like Paul Newman's movies more.

Newman was really cool, but I think it took longer for it to develop. McQueen died at or not long after his "peak" coolness.
And, as cool as Newman was - McQueen was way cooler. The best evidence I have to offer is that even Bruce Lee wanted to be Steve McQueen super badly.
So, McQueen wins this one pulling away.

Both guys living in the era of Marlboro's, Lincoln drop tops, and black an white photos just adds to the coolness of both.
But Newman's ability to remain cool in the fricking 1980s (which ruined the coolness of many entertainers) has to be counted for.
Plus... The bastard played a mean game of pool

No question - I agree with the poster who suggested James Dean. I can't concur with Brando - who was extremely cool for almost 20 years, but lived too long and was weird AF - so that totally crushed his cool vibe into the 80s and 90s.
So, if the top 3 are Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and James Dean (Elvis also blowing his shot at this company by being way too weird down the stretch) - what is that second tier?
Cary Grant? Dean Martin? Sinatra?
Any "younger" guys worth mentioning? Robert Downey, Jr.? Wesley Snipes? Hamm? Paul Rudd? One of the Ryans? Pratt? Cooper?

Sinatra? oops didn't see you listed him.
Frank was cool personified.

Damn man ... you have brought disgrace onto an otherwise great thread.

McQueen
Then Newman, Dean and Mifune. Then Eastwood, Grant, Flynn.

Sorry, baw. I was just brainstorming. I wasn't endorsing any of the younger guys, to be honest.

Mifune.
Good catch.

Eastwood
Yeah - but isn't he falling victim to "cranky old man" syndrome as he ages?

Flynn.
Yeah.
Speaking of Mifune, maybe Sonny Chiba?

I know he isn't what would be defined as "cool" in this context, but Keanu seems like pretty down to Earth dude. I think he'd be cool to hang out with

What is cool?
1. Good looking?
2. DGAF
3. Getting laid with lots of women
4. Leader and conquerer of men
5. Someone who kicks arse
6. Big risk taker
7. Someone you emulate or look up to
8. Sacrifice to the greater good
Both are good actors. But trying to determine who's cooler is high school behavior.

Steve McQueen Steve McQueen
When I was a little boy I wanted to grow up to be
Steve McQueen Steve McQueen
The coolest doggone motherscratcher on the silver screen
I'd drive real fast everywhere no one would ever catch me
And I'd kick your arse if you pissed me off so be careful what you ask me
And I'd never have an empty bottle or an empty bed
And as cool as Paul Newman is I bet Steve could whup his head

Newman was the better actor.
McQueen was cooler.
Two of my all-time favorite actors (with Lee Marvin, Robert Mitchum, and John Wayne).
Overall edge to Newman for Cool Hand Luke and Hud.
I read a McQueen bio once and he really didn't like Newman, who was his main billboard rival. The only film they appeared in together was The Towering Inferno and I'm pretty sure they didn't speak to each other off-set.

This.
I loved Newman, but he had Joanne to keep an eye on him.
Nobody was McQueen's boss, not even Ali McGraw.
