BREC board votes to pursue plan to relocate zoo, expand Greenwood Park

The chances of the Baton Rouge Zoo remaining at its 47-year-old home in north Baton Rouge dropped significantly Thursday evening when the board overseeing recreation and parks in the parish voted to pursue a plan to find new sites for relocating the zoo and to expand Greenwood Park in its place
quote:
Thursday's vote, however, does grant BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight the authority to scout "the best potential alternative location" for the Baton Rouge Zoo, including authority to negotiate a land deal and come up with a funding plan. Rebuilding the zoo is estimated to cost $110 million, while adding flashy, new amenities to Greenwood Park is projected to cost another $40 million.
quote:
Zoo move opponents, on the other hand, questioned why BREC would yank its premier attraction out of north Baton Rouge while the rest of the community is recognizing the need to invest in the neglected side of town. They blamed the zoo's declining attendance figures on the facility being out of date, saying the state-of-the-art version BREC has proposed building elsewhere could also attract more visitors in north Baton Rouge.

because those people don't have the disposable income to go to the zoo enough to support it. It's partially in shambles because no one from south Baton Rouge wants to drive 40 minutes to get to a shitty zoo in Baker.

I agree the Zoo really which Zoo in NBR!
You can gate the homes around Prescott and mochican to have a day time gangster zoo.
Then you got the poor animals surrounded by a Zoo.
Zoo really I thought in between Baker and NBR in an area calll Brownsfield. Really not a city just an area between Scotlandville and Baler.
I think they should move the Zoo if they can find the funding without asking for more taxes!

The zoo and the airport need to be moved to a better location IMO.

Smart move by BREC. I do find they do a pretty good job running the zoo for what they have to work with and it is enjoyable to visit.
BUT, it is a pain to drive out to the zoo where it is and the location is horrible. Would help tremendously if they move the zoo. Should increase attendance and therefore help increase the funding for the zoo.

No one recognizes a "need" to invest in north Baton Rouge. It's a disaster zone. There is incentive after incentive to place things there. None make it lucrative or even break even.

I'm glad they're moving the zoo, but frick spending 40 million on that park when they move out the zoo. The people in that area will just use it for a spot to deal drugs and break into cars. As it is, the people in that area go and break into cars when people go to that park

BREC has not demonstrated that they can run a zoo and kept it up so why should we let them build a new one that they will neglect.
And where is the money coming from? The same people who are going to be ask to fund a new road tax, the new COA tax, the ned CATS tax, the new gas tax, the Tram tax, the tax for a new prison, the tax for a new mental health facility, and so on and on and on.
And the idea that if the zoo move it will be able to sub stain itself is ridiculous. All zoos lose money. None break even.
With all the needs in EBR it's crazy to be talking about spending 150 million or more on a zoo and a big park.

I go to the zoo.. I don't find it dilapidated. I see no need to spend $140 million for a new zoo. Build a new golf course instead.

I can't wait to watch the Gravy meltdown rant later.

Invest in North Baton Rouge? How about fixing that area and then talk about tertiary shitvlike zoos. People don't want to drive through Beirut to see a hot, miserable polar bear.
