navigation systems getting hacked maybe
Nah. Poor seamanship is my guess.
Not many details on this collision but there are entirely too many eyeballs on the bridge of a navy ship for them to be running into other ships or having a ship run into them. The latter would be much worse imo

Nav system hacked by Russians?

The McCain seems to be living down to its namesake's descendent who has a history of crashes.

Probably a female boatswain mate

I thought I read on its wiki page that it's named after both St and Jr (grandfather and father). The grandfather was an early aviator who commanded an aircraft carrier in WWII. The father was a submariner who ended up as CINC PAC during the Vietnam war.
It's bullshite to name one ship after two men. At least call it the McCains, like the Sullivan's.

How do 10 crewmembers become lost in a collision such as this? Is there crew stationed on deck and get thrown overboard as a result of the force from the collision?
In the USS Fitzgerald collision two months ago, there was a ~12' x 17' hole below the waterline. It opened a berthing area that held 35 sailors to the sea. It flooded to it's ~10' high overhead in about 45 seconds. 28 of the 35 were able to escape. They were initially listed as missing. Their bodies were recovered once they made port and were able to get divers into the flooded spaces.

Meanwhile the USCG will investigate..and continue to operate in a safe naval manner.
Pretty easy when you only operate in water no deeper than 10'

Pardon my ignorance, but why are we reliant on night watch crews? We spend a shite ton on these ships yet still depend on a human to notice a giant ship in the distance.
false, there are numerous sensors that would have alerted the crew.
The strait is a fairly narrow operating area. Usually what happens is our USN vessel reacts per international maritime convention yet the other ship does not.
There's a collision avoidance guidance called the "Right hand Rule"... Basically if you are on a collision path, turn right. Many of these maritime collisions happen because the operator of the other ship ignores even that most simple technique.
Many civilian crewed ships operate with autopilots engaged. All it takes if for one sleeping "night watch" civilian for a commercial ship to operate in a dangerous manner within a restricted channel.

Does John McCain's ship also have dimentia and brain cancer?

They need to install some bigger windshields on them things.

It's quite possible that the collision is the fault of the merchant ship...it is just alarming that this has happened to two to Burke class destroyers in the 7th fleet in one summer.
