Is it just me or did Russel Gage come out of nowhere?

I remember being at the first game Coach O was the head guy and saying "Who is #39?"

Under Les you never even heard of him. Why the sudden change idk. I don't know much about the guy but feel like their is so much more talent below him. All I know is that he is a good blocker. So he must be a starter for a reason.

Did anyone else feel the same way last year and now?

Before the 2016 season, he was a DB. So it makes sense that he would come on later in the season because he was learning a new position.

So, Yes.

He was a late addition to his class and drew scoffs and snide remarks . He was an immediate " locker room guy" and liked by his teammates. He soon became a coaches favorite because of his work ethic. But he was buried on the depth charts behind more physically talented guys . And then it turns out he has sticky hands and runs great routes and busts his arse blocking. It's a great story of perseverance. He earned EVERYTHING. And if he makes an NFL roster I'll be as proud of him as I am of OBJ .

I know his family and worked with his Uncle in the past. He told me that Russell has a very strong work ethic. From what I have seen he absolutely does. The young man comes from a good family and it doesn't surprise me he is doing well.

I addition to obviously being able to play, I think Gage was added to the starting line-up as a message to the other players: "If you bust your arse in practice and do the right things, we'll give you a shot on Saturdays"

Coaches like guys they can trust. Gage appears to be one of those guys. There are other more physically talented players, but maybe their consistency is lacking. Gage is probably someone who the coaches know what they're going to get every play.

I don't know where some people are getting that Gage is just an average athletic talent... I think it's just taken some time to "click" but he's an athletic freak ...quotes from last year;

quote:

One of the plays that turned heads came when Gage, running a jet sweep in a full-scale scrimmage, leaped over All-SEC free safety Jamal Adams. “Jamal had outside containment and there was nowhere to go, so I hurdled him,” Gage said. “It’s something you don’t plan to do; it just happens.”

quote:

“He’s very, very fast,” Etling said. “He might have the highest vertical on the team. He’s a freak athletically. He’s an impressive athlete.”

I remember his freshman year I suggested he could return kick-offs and people scoffed at that idea. Maybe it was because he was "only a 3*" but I suggest people go back and watch his high school film. His talent was apparent then

The Les staff didn't like him for some reason...but, once they were gone, he was on the field.

I saw him get roasted a few times in the spring game at DB and wondered why he was even offered. Glad they found a spot for him and he's showing out.

Under Les and Cam he was not getting much attention. Coach Steve and O gave him a chance and he is delivering.

Another perfect example that these rankings don't matter much. LSUs class is perfectly fine. Have a great mix of prospects, with a chance to add more Elite talent. I'm just ready for this season to get under way so all the doubters can disappear. This is going to prove to be a great staff, maybe elite staff, yep I said it.

He spent his entire career switching positions and not doing very well. He worked his arse off to become a decent player that they rewarded with playing time over some complacent players

Only because he wasn't a 4 or 5 star. They get al the attention because recruiting sites know it all.
