Seems like most of the country IS NOT underestimating LSU. They are the second ranked SEC team to start the season despite being picked to finish 3rd...in the West...at SEC media day.

They lose three 1st round draft picks from last season along with both starting LB's and WR's (3 of them drafted). They also lose their most experienced O lineman. Along with all of that their new HC is a guy who was almost universally thought to be a poor hire. Yet......despite all of that they start the season a the second ranked SEC team.

Some LSU fans are DESPARATE to play the underdog, "no respect" role. But the reality is that the country sees LSU as a great program even though LSU hasn't exactly lived up to expectations for 3-4 years now. Sorry to burst your bubble, but LSU's days of "no respect" are well in the past...and that's a good thing

Underestimated ?

My problem is that going 10-2 in the SEC gets you in the top ten, likely the playoffs depending where other teams in the SEC finish

I believe he is referring to people thinking that we are overrated at #12.
Unfortunately, we have not lived up to our ranking as of late, especially the last few years, so I have no problem with anyone taking a "show me first" position on LSU.

Having said that, as a fan, I see more reason for optimism than pessimism this year. Whether we reverse the recent trend and finish higher than 12 or whether the O-line or quarter back play will be our downfall makes for an exciting season. Sure, I'd rather be bored while winning national championships every year, but with so many subplots on this team, it makes for a great run-up. Can't wait 'till this season finally starts!

Oline is good with no more injuries. We have a solid core of freshman. They will be fine but if they are forced to start it would be helpful if we're 4-5 games in. We're solid at C & G. We just need Malone and Toby to stay healthy.

Likely to get you in the playoffs? Has any SEC team made it to the playoffs at 10-2?

How many years now have we been saying this? Not last year, I know, because we were highly (over)rated in preseason, but every time we're not in the top 10 to start the season, people make this point about being underestimated or under the radar, etc., but it never seems to work out to our advantage. When was the last time we started a season out of the top 10 but finished in it? 2010?

Top ten yes, but playoffs no. Even an SEC champion with two losses, which would be 11-2 after winning the SECCG, would not get into the playoffs ahead of a 1-loss team from another P5 conference, even a non-champion of said P5 conference. If the SEC had had a team like Penn State in 2016, that team would have been left out of the playoff just like Penn State was.

Has there ever been a season in which an OLine didn't suffer any injuries?

Seems to me we're estimated pretty fairly. No one actually knows how LSU will look this year and we have a big question mark at offensive line.

Let's see us against BYU then we can decide what our expectations our.

probably so although sometimes a sloppy first game doesn't mean much. the first few games should decide our expectations somewhat but the SEC games are the real determinate.

imo, in general this team should have a better offense by mid year at least and have a weaker defense until the new guys get experience. so we should be about the same as last year. having said that, we lost 3 games last year we could have and probably should have won; florida, Wisconsin and auburn. that team should have been a one loss team. this year, I think we should be a two loss team.

That's been our weakness in the last 8or9 years!Hurt the QB from Bama would not be near as good if he had to play with the Tiger offense line!!!

Again, I am not talking about what we are ranked in preseason polls, which personally I think doesn't even matter. I am just saying in discussions with other fans of other schools they have us marked down as a "W".
Was not trying to second guess anybody expert knowledge on our team. Just making a comment about what others are saying.
I hope we win all of our games!!

we lost a ton to the NFL and our new HC is a huge question mark. that we're as high as 12th is amazing honestly.

I have always thought the underdog mentality is just what Louisiananians gravitate to naturally. Being the favorite and having high expectations feels too much like pressure and this state can only see an opportunity to fail with such praise.
Instead , as the underdog , only the opportunity to have a pleasant surprise exist. No pressure to meet lofty goals. Hell , you can only be disappointed when something/ someone fails to come through.
But to see yourself as off the radar with no real belief you "should" succeed ...well that is much much easier to live that way. No pressure . No disappointment . Only pleasant surprises.

This. Exactly this. A little creativity could offset some of the O Line issues we may have. For years it's been, "We're about to run the ball. You know it. We know it. The fans know it. But you're not going to stop us because my O Line is going to move you out of the way." That worked most of the time except when it didn't.

Maybe defenses not knowing exactly what's about to happen will be beneficial.
