In terms of total energy consumption per capita, Louisiana ranked the highest of any state, totaling 912 million Btu (MMBtu) per person in 2015. These rankings reflect the total consumption across all sectors in the state: residential, commercial, transportation, industrial, and electric power. Wyoming ranked second with 893 MMBtu, followed by Alaska (840 MMBtu), North Dakota (802 MMBtu), and Iowa (479 MMBtu).
EIA's Today in Energy article
Is that really the reason? I figured the OT might have some creative ideas about what the 2nd, 3rd and other factors might be.

100 Degree F temps and 100% humidity comes to mind. Takes a bit of energy to cool things down and get rid of my swamp arse.

Heating the way WE heat down here does, using our HVAC System.
Not the case if you have a furnace in the house and heating oil etc. Like in Christmas Story.

WHO THE frick CARES?
look at it as La. doing its part to help the economy. Go ask those low energy consumers to step up their game.

And farming. If you look at the states that use a lot of energy per capita, it's places that produce energy, grow things, or still have manufacturing. Louisiana does a whole lot of two of those three things.
EDIT: All of those three things, if you count petrochem as manufacturing.
Now, let's talk about Maine. It's just fricking cold in Maine.

Depends on what your heating medium is, method of heating, etc. Many factors.

Takes alot to run dem plants.

Plants. Simple. A lot of megawatts needed to run the process.

I would think the main reason is the amount of Industrial plants here..... it takes energy to make energy.

What's the refinery to population ratio compared to other states...

I've lived it worked in every state on the South. It doesn't get much hotter and more miserable them in Louisiana summers. Plus, there are a lot of older homes, that aren't very energy efficient.
