Funny, isn't that why Trump was elected because people were pissed off seeing the dow jones explode but their wages stayed at 12 dollars an hour?
Haven't heard this one yet. Trump doesn't want the working man making more money. He wants the executives making more money. Those are his buddies.
And the only reason Trump won is because HRC would have lost to literally anyone.

The biggest difference was that Obama was running around saying "your job isn't coming back" and Trump said "We're keeping your job here".
You can debate the manner in which he goes about securing those jobs (protectionism, anti-free market tactics, etc) but he was giving these workers a far different message than Obama or Clinton. Hell, HRC said she was putting coal miners out of business then refused to even go to WV to face the music.

Sounds like it's time to nut up and start your own company. Go head and earn the big money....

Have people not noticed what the unions have done to Detroit?
I attended a college student architecture show in Chicago some years ago. Our team shipped up our cardboard design.
When the truck finally arrived at the exhibition hall they wouldn't unload it. The shipping company said that the dockworker's union (forget their name) had to be the one to unload the truck.
After waiting for over an hour for it to get unloaded they set it on the ground just inside the main shipping-bay doors ... in the fricking rain. They refused to bring it inside the hall because that was another union that sets up for conventions and such.
It was raining, our project was cardboard, and we were tired of waiting, so we started to bring it in ourselves. Some a-hole with a convention hall polo stood in our way and made us stop ... because ONLY members of that union were allowed to bring shite into the center.
We outnumbered this a-hole, so we just rolled our project on inside. He said some bullshite about reporting us to our school; never heard another word about it. When it was all over we said "frick it" and just left the project up there - didn't win anyway.

I've heard so many stories like that. I'm so glad I've never had to deal with union labor before.
I remember watching a show about the renovation of JFK airport in NY. The construction crews were in the middle of a critical lift for a pod that being preserved for it's historical architecture. Well, right in the middle of it, the clock chimes 10:00. Bam, mandatory coffee break. Left that thing just dangling in the wind 20 ft off the ground. No fricks given.

Folks there is NO WAY this plant is going to unionize. It is not going to happen.
Posted on 8/1/17 at 9:31 pm to SlapahoeTribe
Had a similar experience on a departure flight out of LaGuardia. One hour delay on the plane and two hours off, waiting on the union guy to glue down a small carpet corner area in the cabin.
Interesting discussions about unions on that flight.

How do unions create unsafe work places? Have you ever worked in a union job/plant?

It sounds like some of you would be delighted to have Thai hookers in whatever state you live in working for five dollar services but if challenged will say "well then all the hookers will move to x state and that will cost us jobs." Do you really want those jobs?
i mean these mythical thai hookers can unionize but that doesn't mean im gonna pay more than like 11 bucks for a hj

I'm being specific to the UAW.
Go check out some pictures of UAW folks in car plants. Many have no long pants, safety toed shoes, safety glasses, or even hardhats. That's all because the union has negotiated these comfort standards.
Posted on 8/1/17 at 9:56 pm to upgrayedd
If their union has negotiated these terms then that is wrong. I have worked in a union chemical plant for the past ten years and our biggest fight is on safety issues. We as union operators are the ones pushing for more stringent safety rules. Most people clump all unions together without having any real knowledge of actual unions. While unions do have their problems they have also done a lot of good.

They have, but they have run their course. Most industries have massive safety programs driven not only by govt regulatory agencies but also by insurance companies that ensure the best practices are enacted if for no other reason than for litigation prevention. The pro-union folks love living in the past as if unions today are akin to unions in 1915. They're mostly political machines that are in the business of strong arming their opposition.

Just dropped in this thread to say frick unions, particularly public sector unions and all union thugs.
Take your blow-up scabby rats and shove them up your asses.

It would be a sad day if Mississippi's economic development gold mine in the form of a Nissan plant is shuttered due to the interference of Marxists from other states.
Posted on 8/1/17 at 10:33 pm to Salt Lick
Dude, they employ 6,000 people at an average wage likely significantly higher than the average wage in Mississippi and other Southern states. This one plant accounts for almost a percent of Mississippi's total employment base.

Holy cow governor. Heaven forbid we should attempt to have not just a job but a job worth having.
Again, this plant employs 6,000 people in an MSA of only 270,000 workers. The fact wages are low relative to where you think they should be means one thing and one thing only: there is a demand for those jobs. Hiking wages will only serve to increase unemployment.
Do you understand how massive a plant is that employs 6,000 people and the impact that level of investment and payroll has on the productivity of the entire region?
Posted on 8/1/17 at 10:44 pm to dukesilver72
I have started my own company.
I am not silly enough to assume that the average plant worker is capable of founding the Nissan Motor Corpration.
When will you folks realize that not everyone is a capitalist at heart?

You guys need to join the economics Book Club on the Book Board. Our first entry in the series discussed such "spread-the-work" schemes ad nauseum ... and completely dismantled them.

The unions tried this with Boeing here in Charleston. It didn't go their way.
Exactly and the back and forth was brutal. Every other commercial on every radio channel was a pro union or vote no ad. The amount of anti-union stuff passed around the offices was obnoxious and the union reps knocking on your doors to try and persuade you was equally obnoxious.
Unions have served their purpose and gone the way of the dodo.
