Most of his peripheral numbers are very similar to last year. He's just started serving up HR balls. For a reliever it's easily the difference between being reliable and terrible.

Is it fixable? I have no idea, but we weren't going to replace the entire bullpen, you have to hope some of the guys regain some form.

Once again, comparing prospects traded to your prospects doesn't mean shite. If the A's or twins didn't want the guys we offered, 94 preferred the Nationals offer what are you going to do?

You end up over paying and everyone has a meltdown anyway

There were no rumors at all that we offered anything. Why? Because we probably didn't.

People who wanted at least two bullpen arms have a point. Why? Well, when you have such a depth problem in your pen that 8 to 10 run leads don't feel safe, you want your front office to address it. The Nationals did.

Good for the Nationals, what if the A's preferred what they were offering instead of what we were?

I doubt Luhnow went into the trade deadline saying, "frick it Liriano will do" he's not an idiot, no matter what people think.

Somehow our farm is high up in every ranking and everyone except for actual GMs like our prospects. Every single team just likes every other teams prospects

He went in targeting an injury plagued lefty on a squad with a crazy owner and had no back up plan.

He went into the trade deadline saying, "I'm not overpaying for anyone". That's all we know. Apparently, based on the results after the deadline, what he thought was "overpaying" was actually the point to which he needed to go to get a deal done, like many other clubs did, and he decided not to do it.

Everything doesn't always get leaked, especially early. Hell the Cubs and White Sox team accounts broke the Quintana trade.

I'm not a vehement Luhnow proponent, but he's done a good job and any other GM could have been in the same situation.

I just think the want to fix every hole we have is kind of outlandish. Some yell for the bullpen and the also wanted to add Gray or Darvish.

It appears Luhnow went the bullpen route and got fricked. Who knows what else he's worked on for the past week that could have been

Just got in from the airport, & I have thoughts:

1. Cooperstown is awesome, you all should go to an induction weekend.
2. Our offense is still really good
3. I'm still disappointed we didn't pick up another reliever

That's all I got

You guys are right, I'm wrong.

Luhnow sucks.

My bad.

Looking forward to a change in GMs soon.

For those scoring at home, Sipp's last 6 appearances:

4.2 IP
9 hits
10 ER
4 HR allowed
19.29 ERA

I dont expect EVERY hole to get fixed but you have to choose something to work on and get it done.

Luhnow obviously decided on the pen. There was a ton of arms that moved that could have shored up weaknesses that didnt cost an excessive amount. We werent just one arm away.

This Astros team can and will beat the shite out of average and less than average pitching. Maybe like no other team in the history of the game.

Seriously.

But pitching dominates playoff games, because the teams that get that far have above average pitching.

We had pitchers of the month in consecutive months, but most still knew we needed one more playoff arm. Not only did we not get that arm, one of our pitchers of the month without much in the way of a MLB resume, is going back to the DL for the second time, having shown no signs of sniffing his previously good results after 4 starts.

Many of the respected posters in this thread spent the first half of this season realizing Giles was not fit to be our playoff closer. But just to give you an idea of the shape of the pen now, many feel he might be the MOST reliable arm in there at this point.

I've followed the Astros through every single playoff season and series they have ever played. Been around the game all my life. Anything can happen. I'm gonna be there til the end, but make no mistake, all of the other contenders got better recently, while the Astros did not.

Its not just you Im just tired of seeing the excuse that "other teams just fall in love with a certain prospect" and "if DK and LMJ arent both right than it doesnt matter anyways"

I find it hard to believe that with all the activity that was completed people see our prospects as junk and yankees/cubs/dodgers prospects in each respective organizations second tier mind you as the second coming of Mike Trout. Neither the yankees nor dodgers gave up their top guys and the Cubs didnt have to give up any of their recent promotions that arent even starting.

As for the DK/LMJ. You have to believe at least one gets right. If only one gets right then adding quintana/yu/gray gets you 2 high level starters pitching 2 starts in a playoff series.

No one is saying he sucks. We could all look stupid come October, but it is mighty disappointing to see just about every good team that has a chance in October make really strong plays while the Astros get caught standing still.

Since no one gave out top tier prospects, maybe, just maybe, other orgs have better or had more highly sought after or other teams liked a particular one better than our 2nd tier prospects?

It's just a thought. And I'll leave it at that. I've had enough for the day.

Listening to Morton talk, he seems like a bit of a head case.
