Republicans should thank John McCain

a) This bill was absolute shite. None of the bills proposed were that great (personally I preferred repeal/replace) but this bill was just terrible. It did nothing to curtail the rise of premiums, and actually disincentivized people from getting health insurance. Plus from what I read last night, the rollbacks on the mandate were temporary.
b) when you are in a situation where you want to pass a bill, and hope the other legislative body doesn't pass it you aren't making good decisions for the country.
c) The senate would let go of all deal making by sending it to conference, as house republicans could just say - well ok we will pass the bill you passed.
d) Republicans can still blame healthcare of obama.
I know many of you don't see it this way, and I get you are angry. Trump needs a win, and there is no win in sight. The budget is going to suck, tax reform will be a bitch and infrastructure?
Republicans still need to get back to work on healthcare, and come up with something that is a good bill. I really like trump's call for them to skip recess to work on this bill.

No. If we can't have repeal then just let it fail on its own.

The people who are thanking John McCain are the Republican congressmen who didn't want to pass the bill but had a constituency polling for passage. Knowing McCain would stop the bill they were free to vote 'yes' when they really wanted to vote 'no.'

Yeah, I am not a big fan of mccain. he talks a big game but usually fails to deliver.

yes, let's not pretend that they aren't secretly thanking mccain. hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it was planned. since he is in all likelihood going to die soon.

I don't blame Johnny boy... I blame the rest of the repubs who had years and years and years to come up with something better.... and failed
Say what you want about the dems, they have their shite together and move in lock-step... repubs, not so much

There should be a Trump bill that someone champions in the Senate.
This vague BS he is spouting about beautiful healthcare needs to be defined and clearly articulated so the people know exactly the benefit of it and exactly when it take effect.

Well. Based on prior votes, they had the votes to repeal.
Alas, some of them were liars

One that is not thanking him is Mitch McConnell. All other things aside, having a bill you bring to the floor fail when you have a majority is a major, major failure.
But I agree, this is actually a good outcome for Republicans, politically speaking. No telling what happens in conference, and had the House passed this skinny repeal it would have been disastrous.

I think it was. Make the "effort" to repeal without the nasty consequences of being tied to the the resulting failures. It's long enough out from 2018 elections that you can pass a tax cut and placate the base.

The politics on this shite are complicated. Mcconnell may have just known he needed to get a vote done to shut down the crowd.
sometimes you have to kill a chicken to keep the monkey's quiet.
normally I would agree that mcconnell would be embarrassed about this.

I don't blame McCain or any of the other RINOs that voted against it. The blame lies squarely at the feet of the dems that passed obamacare without any Republican support. If obamacare was agreat as we were told, it wouldn't need to be fixed.
It does suck that the Republicans didn't have a coherent replacement ready to go but they are not at fault for the mess that is called obamacare

Trump should say to Congress and Senate. Since you don't want to improve health care law. You need to be on it.

quote:Only way I see forward at this juncture is mandatory healthcare insurance for all.
This bill was absolute shite.
Medicaid plans open for purchase at cost.
Anyone above poverty line would be assessed a progressive tax capped at the total cost of medicaid insurance.
Proof of insurance would exempt the tax.
100% of the population would be insured.
Private policies could either supplement Medicaid as they do in Medicare-plus, or replace it. Private policies available across state lines along with reversion to pre-ACA requirements.
======
With the extremely high cost of Medicaid exposed, next focus would have to be on bringing down costs of care. Opening up pharmaceutical, equipment, and device purchase to international markets, Tort reform, elimination of CONs, etc.
