re: New irons

Well being that the course I play I have wedge into almost every hole, I would rather work on my wedge game than buy a new set of irons that won't improve my score, even though some guy on the internet thinks I'm not good enough to play blades

I don't think the name of the thread is "everyone get new irons". I made the suggestion for the OP to try the AP1s and everyone gets butt hurt because they play blades, and their pappy played blades and their pappy's pappy played blades.

I'm a 5 and I want to play GI irons
I just bought some mizunos though

My pappy never played golf
I'm not butt hurt about anything. But I do think you're underestimating a 12 hdcp. Since I started playing blades my hdcp has actually gone down because I can work the ball either way when I need too. They have given me more options. And you said earlier a 12 hdcp shouldn't even be thinking of these things and just thinking about solid contact. I've looked at some of the game improvement irons and they look like fricking shovels. There is no way I would feel comfortable playing them.
This is not directed at you, but there are a lot of blanket statements made on this board that are flat out wrong. One of them being "the reason you're a 12 hdcp is because you're playing blades". I'm an 11, I play blades, I hit them well, and I love them. Do I miss greens? Yes, so does Jordan speith. But I'm playing with what I'm comfortable with.

That's great and if you're happy I'm happy. I will however stand by my statement that I think 90% of 12 HCPs need to be using a more forgiving club. 11 Handicaps are free to play blades in my book from now on.

It's ok if some people are happy with their blades, but many of them would see tighter shot dispersion and better distance control with GI irons. I think with a lot of golfers it's an ego thing. It's as if you are dropping down a level or admitting you shouldn't play what the pros play.

How dare you use logic and reason to form your opinion on this matter!

WTF does that even mean?

Any of you have any opinions on a good GI/player's iron to try out? I've browsed the Apex,M2,and AP2 offerings.
Go to a respected fitter and hit a variety of clubs. Unless someone is paying you to swing a club you should have ZERO brand loyalty.
I have:
TM woods
Titleist irons
Cleveland wedges
Odyssey putter

Most 12 handicaps are going to be making solid contact most every swing. A 12 handicap is a mid 80s shooter on average. Most of their bad shots are going to from bad drives and short game. They'll miss greens, sure, but it's not going to be a straight shank most of the time. Playing a game improvement iron may actually hurt some of these players bccaue of lack or workability. A 12 handicap could be that way for a multitude of reasons so saying 90% of 12's need to be using GI irons is widly inaccurate IMO.

I rotate between Callaway Apex's, and Titleist CB's. But, my scoring clubs, wedges, are always Vokey's...

A GI iron won't correct straight shanks. It's going to help on inconsistent ball striking (read, off center hits). I'd guess that most 12 hc are still inconsistent ball strikers. I'm probably around a 15 hc and my mid-irons are probably the weakest part of my game.

If you like your x22's try the x24. I have a set of x24 hots and like them.

I believe you, but a lot of 12 handicaps cant do anything around the greens and their ball striking is fine. If you snipe a drive it the woods, have to punch out, miss the green, and then can't get up and down you've brought double or triple in play. You might have missed the iron shot by 5 yards.
This is my point, people come on this board making blanket statements. Many 12 handicaps may be single digit ball strikers, but struggle in another area of their game so saying 90% of 12's need to play GI irons is dumb. No one could ever know that.

Just like to add there aren't that many pro's roll with a pure blade setup, many have hybrid or CB higher irons.
My personal opinion is that having the ability to shape shots will be one of the last things you add to your game to lower your score.

It's not even necessary to work it both ways anymore

This thread is all over the place.
I'm a 6 handicap. I play Apex. They're forgiving. They hit high and that makes up for the low spin. I like them. They work for me. I know a 10 HC who can't stand them and play AP2s and he's really good from the fairway. He's a 10 because of short game and the tee.
This is what is terrible about golf advice sometimes. People make sweeping statements/conclusions.
Masterag thinks every person who is inconsistent has a rhythm problem.
Your irons should be based on your HC.
Your shaft stiffness should be based on your swing speed.
All that being said, advising the OP to look at more forgiving club isn't bad advice. As long as it goes with "get fit" or "test out a bunch". Because at the end of the day, the best configuration of clubs for each person isn't going to be based on swing speed and HC.

I'm with you on that. I currently game TM driver, cway FW's, hybrids, and irons, cleveland wedges, and Scotty Newport putter I've had 15 years (can't part with my Scotty). I hit the Apex's great this morning, comfortable feel, looked great at address, and I discovered a great deal on eBay today on a set that just about matched my specs perfect. I'll have to get them bent an extra degree up, and I was changing the grips on them anyway, so grip size is irrelevant. If I can get them for a song, I'll pull the trigger on those. I believe I could easily re-sell them, for what I could get them for, if I didn't like them off real grass.
