I was going to concede the point that yes a 12 should look at AP1s, but this is just stupid. Your saying the sole width just doesn't matter? It's all vanity of not wanting to be seen with a wide sole club?

First off: you're*. Secondly: the not wanting to be seen part was a bad example and you're right to laugh at it. My point is unless you are a decent iron player and struggle elsewhere to bring your handicap up to a 12 (which is the case is some people) the AP1 or other GE options are the way to go. A slimmer sole is for working the golf ball and flighting shots. 90% of 12 handicaps shouldn't be focused on those things. The wider sole helps with consistent solid contact.

Meh, as a weekend warrior golfer my issues come from the short game... chips and putts where you need lots of touch, which requires daily practice. No problems getting the ball down to the green with blades.

Maybe they're like me and the irons are the only dependable part of their game. I play some old ping I3's that would probably be more of a players iron, but I hit them pretty well. The driver and short game not so much.

Mizuno JPX-900 Forged and Srixon 765 are good options to add that are outside the major manufacturers. More important than club head, though, is the shaft.

I hit the Apex, M2, and AP1's and 2's this morning. Got the best ball flight from the Apex, +1/2" long recoil 110 F4 shaft. Very straight and an average 180 carry, which is on par with my current 6 iron carry. Got the nice, high ball flight from the 7 with the jacked up 6 iron loft, so holding a green wouldn't be an issue. I've never even hit a PING,Mizuno,or Srixon iron, so I'm definitely curious of what results I get from them.

I really wanted the Apex until I hit them. It was at a PGA Superstore in one of their simulators and I just didn't care for the feel of them. We even put face tape on to make sure I was making solid contact.
Ended up buying the Mizuno JPX850 forged irons. Probably the best iron I've ever hit.

I'd argue most 12 handicappers are making solid contact with irons. Majority probably lose strokes elsewhere like an errant drive, a few missed wedges, or missed putts.
I mean, is it just me, or does anyone else agree that a 12 hc is a good golfer? I certainly wouldn't consider that to be struggling. I think you're undervaluing that handicap and the skills of those that play to it.

Yes because all scratch golfers hit 18/18 GIR every time they play. Or maybe they are better at getting up and down when they miss?
Number one cause of missing the green with my irons is lack of time to practice, not the equipment I'm using. Same with my short game.

So if your wedge game isn't as good wouldn't you want to limit the amount of times you miss the green? Maybe take that from 12-14 missed greens down to 6-10

If you're comfortable with a player's iron, you're doing yourself a disservice if you dont' consider the Wilson Staff V6's.
