I mean, all of this ACA discussion has me missing my 1990s healthcare. Does anyone feel the same.

Technological advances which are expensive.

Once an entitlement is given, it cannot be taken away.
That's a rule, right up there with death and taxes.

to be more specific
once an entitlement is created, it cannot be taken away without the death of millions of people

Votes and lobbying.
Dems get the votes. Both get the lobbying.

Because Republicans are afraid of catching backlash for people with pre-existing conditions losing insurance or having insurance companies be able to charge them more for coverage.
Although they should be more afraid of backlash from voters who have been electing them to Congress for the past 7-8 years on the promise to repeal Obamacare. They had no problem sending a message by passing all the repeal bills when Obama was in office that they knew would be vetoed. But now that they actually have the power to repeal it, they back down.

then why arent they spending money on r&d like they should?

this is the classic problem with entitlements/welfare/wealth redistribution
once people start to enjoy the property/resources of others, imagining a world where they're not allowed to steal sounds terrible

Republicans are afraid of their own shadows...
They believe the mainstream media, but not their constituents when their constituents demand a repeal of Obamacare. Instead, like slowflo said, they are scared off by the MSM's absurdity with the "millions will die" bit.
And, the MSM has convince the people that healthcare = health insurance, and that Obama is about healthcare, when all it is, is a government sanctioned insurance plan paid for by the taxpayers.

The cost of medical machinery has ballooned with new technology, not unlike an iPhone.

because the insurance companies were paid by Obama and then made a lot of dough then they slushed all of DC in lobbying.

iPhones are a bad example. they're so cheap (compared to their utility and status) that poor people buy them quite often
but to get back to your point. your argument is that costs have increased. this wasn't the argument behind implementing the ACA
the argument, primarily, was "23 million uninsured people" and the ACA itself really doesn't do anything to address costs (especially technology-based costs

A rollback of ACA would not give you back your 1990s healthcare system. There were many changes to healthcare during the Bush and Clinton administrations as well.

Fwiw we did reform entitlements in the 90s

Yes and no.
A lot of people benefit from Obamacare that have no idea that it is the reason for their benefits. 24% of rural Americans get coverage from the expansion of Medicaid - that is a HEAVILY pro-Republican section of the country.
The thing is, if city dwellers lose their coverage due to a Republican-passed mandate, then they will keep voting Democrat anyway. The few that voted Republican may switch.
Those that were able to get heart medication they otherwise could not afford under medicaid living in rural areas, OTOH, may flip. Enough of them do, and you could lose the Senate by 2018, the Presidency and probably the House by 2020.
The BEST way to get rid of it would be for a non-affiliated third party to appeal it to the Supreme Court and try to make the case that it is unconstitutional. IF they could pull that off, they could repeal the act without being blamed (Republicans).

Maybe, but you can't take one without the other. Medical costs in the 21st century have ballooned. Going back to the "90's system" without going back to 90's tech is attempting to take the best of both worlds. It would be like saying, why cant we have the same gas price they had in the 1920's with the same cars with good gas mileage today?
Fact is, you could go back I guess. But it wouldn't be like what you remember.

Healthcare was pretty rough in the 90s for a lot of people. The same issues facing healthcare today were there then. Today they are just worse, but you had skyrocketing premiums, many people not covered, and all sorts of other issues.
