I just don't understand the appeal of these movies. You pretty much know the plot going in, superhero fights supervillain and almost inevitably wins. They have so much CGI that you leave the cinema and your eyes are bleeding. Somehow though, each of these movies makes a mint. I can understand the novelty of the movies when they first started coming out, but that is close to a decade ago now. What is the continued appeal?

Because there is shite else in theaters now and it costs a small fortune to go see a movie. If I'm gonna pay $50 to see something, it better he mind-blowing and that's what super-hero movies are on the big screen. I'm not there to experience some shite comedy or melodrama at today's prices.

What is the continued appeal of horror movies? Dracula came out almost a hundred years ago and people are still watching these movies. You know the good guy is gonna kill the monster at the end, why even watch it?

Some of them are really good.

Most of them are at least entertaining.

Which is why most of go to the movies. To be entertained.

They are fun. They are entertaining. You don't have to think too much.

Ummm....like nearly 95% of any man vs. man stories ever?

Not to mention comic books.

What's the continued appeal of the romantic comedy? The horror film? The western? Etc.?

Character faces situation/enemy/obstacle/journey. Character makes it through said situation/enemy/obstacle/journey. Or not.

1988 Batman was such a huge deal...after a long wait after Superman the Movie.

It was an event.

Wow, we're going to get another superhero movie...nobody was doing them.

Now it's "awww frick, another superhero movie clogging up all the screens at the the local Cinemark."

Sometimes you get 3 playing at one time...on a Thursday.

You're getting older. And kids are growing up to replace you at the theater. Kids tend to care less about plot.

Don't fret. 40 years from now you'll circle back round to enjoying the movies like you were a kid again while smoking your 'don't-give-a-shite-I'm-an-old-man' weed. And you'll freaking love Iron Man 26.

They appeal to the power fantasies of adolescents, struggling against the adult world

Similarly, Superman was the fantasy of two young Jews, and will fight the anti-Semites to protect them

As others have mentioned, you can use this question for any other genre as well. They're not great films, but they're enjoyable, and they're killing it at the box office so don't expect it to go away anytime soon. Just an FYI, 2018 will have 11 superhero movies.

You know it's pretty bad when Steven Spielberg expressed his exasperation about the excessive number of superhero movies by stating that it's only a matter of time before superhero movies goes the way of the Western i.e. extinct.

They're entertaining and most of them are good. It's pretty cool to see superheroes on the big screen, especially some for the first time (WW this year). You don't have to watch them you know?

Solid post. Sorry you have to endure this era. You wouldn't have made it through the era of the Westerns without some serious counseling and pharmaceutical help.

You do realize 95% of movies follow the same basic structure, Volger's Hero's Journey? So what's the appeal of any movie at this point since we already know the exact formula and basic outcome before we start?

Most of us go for entertainment and escapism, and superhero movies provide a nice respite from the real world. What do you more evolved people do for entertainment?
