My boy is sick with baseball.
We're on a travel team and pushed other sports, but he only wants to play baseball year round.

Question for travel baseball parents: how do you balance work and traveling every Thursday/Friday through Sunday. Do you just completely shut down your other kids and their activities?

After you finish your longneck, tell little johnny to grab his bat. Spin the bottle cap at him to see if he can hit it.. If he can pull it off, you will get part of his college tuition paid for.

No wonder kids today are terrible at geography where they go to Memphis or Panama City and play a few games from teams from South alabama or Arkansas and it's called a "World Series".

If you are a good parent, keep to yourself, teach your kid the true meaning and value in sport and sportsmanship, you'll survive a majority of the puke that is youth sports.
I played D1 college baseball. This nearly year round baseball, especially for kids that are pitchers, is brutal.
Every kid is the next big thing at 8-9-10 or 11 years old. It's crazy how much pressure they are putting on these kids. I've only been a spectator to see my friends son, and the parents are worth the price of admission.

year round baseball is for very very very few people...
my kid played fall ball once... and that was enough....
in fact of the 14 seniors he graduated with on his team only 1 played year round - the rest did not...
including the 2 that made all metro and all state.....

only once a year did we ever play on a Thursday or Friday......in travel ball...
but several times we were on the road out of town thursday through sat for HS ball

Why is it that baseball get singled out? Girls are in dance, or cheer, or volleyball all your round. Some kids play musical instruments all year long. Almost every young baseball player who excels also excel in other sports. And most of them do play other sports until time in high school does not permit it. The bottom line is it almost every D1 baseball player play travel ball. Sorry if your kid is a Timmy Lupus.

Not since marucci and Cypress mounds killed ybbr.
And even then the top 5/6 teams were travel teams anyways.
marucci had nothing to do with killing YBBR....
the rise of travel ball killed YBBR with a little help from cypress the last year of YBBR cypress was open - and zero teams playing at cypress had even remotely considered YBBR.
same summer travel mentality is killing am legion for high schoolers.

YBBR was far from a recreational league. Almost every player in that league also traveled and played in tournaments.

My kid plays and you should see the fricking drama that goes on between parents. You give one ounce of constructive criticism about an 11 year old girl and you better be ready to fight.

We joke around here that the introductions should be, Hello, I am Mike Smith and I am a lab tech and my daughter will be signing a full Athletic scholarship to LSU for softball in 10 more years.
Parents have NO clue the difference in travel ball and college ball - no clue.
Sad thing is, most of the kids are burned out and IF the get a shot in college, they are burned out and dont make a 4 year stretch.

It evolved that way but originally it wasn't so much traveling as it was the better players all playing at home against better players in league play.

People seem to take the word "travel" too seriously. My oldest plays on one of the traction teams and we played one tourney in Houston, one in Lake Charles and two in Lafayette. The rest were considered within the Baton Rouge area except for the last one which is Disney. With traction now operating Cypress mounds, they are going to attempt to bring back quality league ball. It will take a few years but hopefully they can get it done. Most parents desire quality league with the option of a few tournaments scattered throughout ending sometime in mid June.

this existed long long long before travel ball......
it's not burn out if the kid decides they don't want to do the work required to continue playing...
and EVERY sport after middle school now is a year round work out and training gig..... as much as i loved HS sports I would NOT have played under todays regimens.. and it's why I quickly balked"pun intended" at playing after HS.... hence the reason my son turned down playing after HS - he doesn't want to spend that amount of time working out, practicing and such - HS was enough.. still loves the game.. and went straight into coaching 2 weeks after he was done playing..
it's not burn out if they choose to do other things.....it's part of growing up.
would we have liked to see him keep playing yep... but we aren't the ones giving up enormous amounts of free time - the athlete is.....
