Question for travel baseball parents: how do you balance work and traveling every Thursday/Friday through Sunday. Do you just completely shut down your other kids and their activities?

I always tried to schedule no more than 2 tournaments more than 90 minutes away out of the 10-11 we play in. Coming from Ascension we would try to schedule one in Youngsville every year because we like playing at their park. If going to Chalmette, some would overnight, some would not. Mostly we would play in the Baton Rouge area.

The reality is...the only reason he plays "travel" is because of the demise of quality league ball. He's a good player but by no means do we have some delusions of grandeur regarding his ability. This IS the reality in most of South Louisiana. There are very few "Rec Leagues" left that are competitive. Most parents that want their son/daughter (which have decent ability) to play competitive baseball/softball are forced into some sort of "travel ball."

The quality of coaching is down as well. Dads who know baseball want to coach and know how to teach the game are either coaching a travel team, or, finding one with a coach who knows how to teach the game.

A pet peeve I had with league/ rec ball was kids are drafted and get maybe 4-6 practices before starting to play games, then there really was no place to practice once games started. There is no way to teach kids anything beyond simple fundamentals in that time frame, much less proper pitching mechanics, catcher work, bunt coverage, etc. Then you get a whole new set of kids the following year who were taught next to nothing. At least on a travel team the kids practice enough to move beyond the basics.

A dozen tournaments in 4 months isnt a lot?

When do these kids go to school?

None of them are Thurs/ Fri types. All are Sat/ Sun and within an hour or so from our area. If you get morning games on Sat, you're done before lunch and have the rest of the day. On Sunday, if your kid's team is good, they may play all day (3-4 games). If you get knocked out in your first game you have the rest of the day to go do whatever.

I don't find baseball is near as bad as Soccer in regards to traveling. I've seen 12U girls from BR traveling from Pensacola to Houston to Shreveport.

If someone tried to start a competitive league in the BR-area, what ingredients do you think it would need to be successful?

Someone has to step up & put a stop to the insanity.

No wonder kids today are terrible at geography where they go to Memphis or Panama City and play a few games from teams from South alabama or Arkansas and it's called a "World Series".

I used to work for a sign shop that made large banners, and from my records, there are no less than 38 different Little Leage "World Series'," and at least 188 different "Nationals."

One thing that never adds up to me is whenever this topic is discussed, whether in person or on a message board, everyone talks about "those parents," but never admits to being those parents themselves. Are you all in denial, or do "those parents" just never talk about travel ball?

Kids that play multiple sports are far better off. My son played baseball from January -July, then football from August - November when he was younger. Now he is in HS and still plays both sports and still takes off completely in December. He pitches and plays QB and the 5 months off not pitching is great for his arm and his mind. If I could go back I would have shortened his baseball season and not played club ball as much. But fun times if kept in the right prospective.

With Traction taking over the management of Cypress Mounds... the word is that they want to form a solid league to ease some of the travel. Go to a more traditional style with kids playing a tournament once a month or so during the spring with league games and practice scattered within. This way the rosters for tournament teams would be more fluid as players move around based on a number of factors. They then would play more tournaments in mid may and june. Currently the way it works.. Your busiest months are March and April for weekend tournaments.

When I was a kid, we played all sports in their respective seasons. What the hell is going on these days?

We just got back from Atlanta and will be in Baton Rouge next weekend. It's expensive, but fun. My son is a dual sport athlete football and baseball. He's 16U and we have been travel baseballing since he was 7U. As long as he loves it, I'm fine with it. We have met many many great players and good people. He was able to play in front of Coach Maneri at LSU and met several of the LSU players during the Showcase.

I dont buy this. Our Dixie plays 9 and 10s together. A 9 year old will see better pitching playing 2 games a week against 10 year old pitchers than 5 games with 9 year old pitchers in a tournament.

What about the 10-year-old?

There's no doubt that for the most part, recreational youth leagues have gone way downhill. "Travel" ball is almost the only game in town in a lot of places. Now, you can still do travel ball without being idiotic about it or it having to be a year-round thing. Some of the people in this thread seem to have a grasp on that.

Who the hell has the time to spend every weekend out of town at a baseball tournament? Do the parents just quit all their hobbies and also do no house/yardwork themselves?

We don't have kids. And one of the reasons is that we're selfish people who would rather spend the weekend going out to eat, day drinking, entertaining, sleeping in or traveling and not driving to Bunkie to watch 9-year-olds play in a baseball tournament. Seems to me that sort of shite destroys marriages.
