If you see him chewing on something he isn't supposed to, take it away, say "no", and then give him something that he is allowed to chew on.

These are animals we're talking about, they've been outside for thousands of years.

As bad as it is, you have to let him cry it out. Try placing a blanket to cover the top and side of the crate.

Usually he'll stop but then he starts back again around 4 or 5 AM

This could be a sign to take him outside to use the bathroom. A 7 week old puppy can only hold it's bladder for about 2 hours.

Last night, I put him in the bedroom with me, but he pooped on the floor 3 times and peed twice.

You're giving him too much space too soon. He hasn't "earned" it. Restrict his space. His kennel should be divided to prevent it from being too big as dogs do not like to eliminate inside their "home." If left too big for his size, he will poop and pee on one side and then go sleep on the other side. This is the reason why I say you are giving him too much space by letting him come to your bedroom right now.

quote:

He's usually pretty good about going to the paper when he's in the living room, but he thinks any rug is a piece of paper to be peed on.

Yes, correct. I personally would eliminate ANY puppy pads or newspaper. You can train your dog, providing you are diligent, to go outside without having to use these.

I don't think he knows the difference between rug and carpet.

He doesn't. And won't for a long time.

Also, he chews on the coaxial cable leading up to my bedroom TV.

He's teething. Normal. But tire him out. I mean wear his butt out when outside. Make sure he uses the bathroom - as long as it takes for you to stand outside and simply encourage him to go. Anytime a puppy plays, whether inside or outside, usually they will need to go to the bathroom about 15 minutes later. And reward him. I mean with treats and affection. Later on, you can simply go to affection.

If an accident happens inside, go and buy Nature's Miracle Urine Remover. This product is magic.

Lastly, remove any water or food from his inside his kennel. He can receive food and water 3 x per day while a puppy. If you happen to leave it out right now, he can eat whenever he wants and there isn't an urgency for him to do so. It also means that you can't control his bowels or bladder either if you do this. But if you only put his food and water out for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, you'll "control" this bodily function better until he can learn to do so.

Put one of your t-shirts in there for him to lay on.

Your scent will calm him. It's worked for me several times.

Seriously dude. Have you never had a dog? Crating him will help potty training and they are naturally den animals who will love dark crates.

If you keep it in an entire room, the space is too big! Crate him (just enough room for him to sleep) and put a towel and a small pillow case filled with rice, heated up in microwave (about 2 minutes). The animal needs warmth to sleep and the pillowcase mimics sleeping next to it's mother.

he is 7 weeks.... unless you have 100% of your attention on him he needs to be in a crate until at least he is a few months old. my dobe was crated up until 6 or 8 months. Read up on crate training and what it mimics and does to your pup.

Basically the crate should be no bigger than enough room for him to go in and turn around and lay. The puppy doesnt want to potty where he lays so he will hold it in as long as possible. but a 7 week puppy has like 2 hours of bladder time. i read it is about 1 hour per month old.(just a generic goby). so every 2 hours you need to take him out the crate and run him outside to pee and poo. then treat and some play time.
Running outside does 2 things. 1 you hurry out so he doesnt potty inside. 2 it shakes him up so he will be ready to go the moment you put him on the grass.

Look i came hom from lunch for 4 months to let my dog out cause he would have shat his kennel if i waited the whole 4+ hours, and look he did shite in his kennel many times. but like everyone said, if you set that schedule for every 2-3 hours take him out and steadily increase the time it will be potty trained in no time.

Now crate training is also teaches him what his boundaries are. When i finally started allowing my dobe some room, you have to only allow him acces to his kennel and a small room, if he doesnt potty in the room you can give him access to a larger area where eventually he will have access to the whole house and he will know the whole house is his kennel and he wont go shite in a random room. If he does have an accident you start closing the rooms off and shrink his boundaries until he understands he cant do what he did.

I loved my puppy but idk if i will ever get another one unless i can work from home for a few months to take care of him.

BTW i was so fricking happy when i folded up my boys crate for the last time.

He has a small bladder, he needs to go out every hour, that is probably why he is crying because he knows not to go to the bathroom on the floor.

You clearly should have researched about puppies before getting one.

He's a puppy he's going to chew....on everything

Buy a crate, put him in it at night right after he potties, outside. Once he goes in the crate do not go get him until 5,6 in the morning. At that point he has to piss.

Puppies will not piss or shite in there crate because they don't want to sleep in it unless they absolutely can't hold it anymore.

If he starts howling at 2am get up and take him out and put him immediately back in the cage. He's going to cry and howl but that's just how it is.

Puppies are cute but a gicantic pain in the arse the first couple months

Yikes. I take it this is your 1st dog? Seems like your way out of your league or understanding on how to raise a puppy.

The dog is 7 weeks old, why in the world would he not be in a crate overnight? That's not even getting into the not taking him outside issue. Not good.

The moments where a 7 week old puppy is left completely out of your sight for long enough to do this should be few and far between. Sounds like you're also not really giving it enough attention.

Got our pup around the same time. Put it in the crate overnight. We stick ours in there before we go to bed at 10sh. In the beginning I was waking up around 2-3am to let him out. They howl at 5 am because they are awake. We feed ours at 6am so I let him out at 5:15 to go to the bathroom and play until 6.

Oh I know. He has several chew toys. I am looking for a means of preventing him from getting to the wires. I may buy a crate to keep him safe at night and to help potty train. He's good about going to the papers by the door when he's out in the open. Vet recommends keeping him inside until he's had all his shots
