There are a couple of issues here:

1) Puppies should not be taken away from their litter until they are at least 10 weeks old.

quote:

He's too young to go outside. He hasn't been fully vaccinated nor has he started taking flee medication

So because he is too young (that's on you) to go outside, then it is your responsibility to train him correctly. Period.

2) Because he has been separated from his mother at such an early age, he has separation anxiety. That is why he cries at night.

3) Puppies and dogs will chew on anything. It is common practice to keep a home dog-proof, i.e. keeping objects out of reach for dogs to get into mischief.

4)Potty training takes time. The fact that he is so young means that he hasn't bean able to learn social behavior from his litter mates. That is on you.

So what you should do is buy a big wire kennel-crate, put the kennel in your room. Train your puppy to go outside at regular times. Always makes sure he goes before bedtime. If you have any questions about training, then ask your veterinarian.

Good luck, you can and will have a good relationship with your Great Pyranees. I have three dogs and they are worth every bit of trouble to bring the joy I have.

As for peeing/pooping, you should be waking up every 2-3 hours to take him outside + reward. If you do that right, you'll never have an accident in the house

This. I was fortunate to be working at home when my dog was a puppy. Getting out of her crate and going outside every 2-3 hours plus a treat when ever she did her business outside had her potty trained in about 2 weeks. The key is to be able to consistently reinforce the incentive system. If you're gone all day and sleep all night, you're not really setting yourselves up for success.

During the night, I had an alarm set for every 2 hours to take the dog out. It was miserable for 1 month but was 100% worth it.

My dog's last accident was about 2 weeks after we got her, going strong for 1.5 years now

Spray bottle works, they also have some stuff you can spray on certain objects that taste like shite so he won't chew on it again

He's usually pretty good about going to the paper when he's in the living room, but he thinks any rug is a piece of paper to be peed on

Which is why I don't like those puppy pads. Teach the dog to do his business outside and reinforce the behavior with treats.

quote:

Immediately after I put him in the room and shut the door, he starts howling. Usually he'll stop but then he starts back again around 4 or 5 AM. Last night, I put him in the bedroom with me, but he pooped on the floor 3 times and peed twice.

Whatever time you normally go to bed, stop giving the dog food/water about 2 hours earlier. Crate him when you go to bed and wake up about midway through the night to take him outside.

Also, he chews on the coaxial cable leading up to my bedroom TV.

Most puppies that young chew on almost anything they can get their mouths around. Get him some puppy chew toys. If he still tries to chew on things he's not supposed to chew, get some bitter apple spray from the pet store to deter chewing.

false. 7-8 weeks is very common.

Maybe if you get it from a puppy mill or an amateur 'breeder'. My wife is a veterinarian and we bought two AKC Westies. The breeders, who had AKC and bloodline papers for all of their dogs, would not sell them until they were at least 10 weeks old.

I am looking for a means of preventing him from getting to the wires
Again, you should be pretty darn close to giving him full attention at all times if he's 7 weeks old. So the preventing part would be you seeing him do it and telling him no and redirecting him. It sounds like you're just gonna losing track of him and letting him wander, correct?

I may buy a crate to keep him safe at night and to help potty train.
You "may" buy him a crate? Man, you got lots of learning to do. Good luck to ya.

This is true. My Aussie just turned 2 so I only have to take him out once a day. Pretty neat

There are ton of good answers in here that have been said multiple time, but I'll reiterate the important stuff.

1. Crate your dog. At 7 weeks he will need to potty about every 2-3 hours.

2. Set an alarm at 3 hours, wake up walk immediately to the kennel, pick him up and take him outside immediately to his potty area. When he uses it loose your shite with how happy you are with him.

3. Take him back inside and immediately back to the kennel. He's gonna whine, it's ok he'll stop.

Notes- if your puppy is whining at the 2 hour and 5 min mark it's ok to go to him, but only so he can potty. If when you take him outside he doesn't use it, put him right back in the kennel.

If you want to train your dog, start introducing a command everytime yall go outside. I use the word "outside" and my dogs all know what it means.

You can also introduce a bell hanging on the door. Every time you take him outside to use it, slap the bell. He'll learn within a few months that the bell means outside, outside=potty. He'll be able to reliably let you know he has to go. **My dogs abuse this, and I had to take it away. If they saw a bird fly by one the windows they would molest the damn bell until they were let outside to defend the base. However, it worked well when they were pups, because even though they were kennel trained they would still have accidents inside due to poor communication.

Pups are a ton of fun. You will lose so sleep... Do yourself a favor and just google raising/training a puppy. Your dog can be a pain in the arse, or the coolest friend ever, and it's pretty much all up to you.

I have a 3 month old puppy and just went through the period you did. Crate training is the best option. Still working on the accidents, but they're pretty much completely eliminated now. He hasn't pooped in the house since the first night. He just sits at the door and either scratches or waits until I come let him out.

You'll have some setbacks, but the key is being consistent. Very cliche, but the accidents usually happen when the schedule is messed up.

Pick up food and water around 7 and let it go outside around 9ish or before you go to bed. It's not wanting to shite inside.... your just giving it no choice. All young puppies need to be taken outside immediately as soon as they eat and drink. Also when it shits inside, throw it in the same spot outside and show it to it. It's instincts will do the rest.

Lots of good info in this thread already. I'll add my $.02

When my german shepherd was a puppy, I kept her on a leash next to my bed. Whenever she would cry, I would reach down and pet her, just to let her know I was there and it would calm her down. Also, set alarms.. take your pup out every 2-3 hours during the night (& day). Don't use newspapers/pads. You don't want pee and poo in the house.
He will be potty trained in no time.

ETA: If you're brand new to raising a dog.. I can't recommend this book enough: The Art of Raising a Puppy

You're right. I shouldn't have said that. Take advice from this thread and do some research on crate training. You'll figure it out.

All of my dogs did great at 7 weeks going outside like the big dogs and everything else. You just walk him out to the grass and nature does the rest, let him play around for a sec, grab him and take him back in. Simple. Effective.

No argument here. Pretty good way to raise a pup.
