body cameras should automatically turn on when LEO gets a call or makes a report into dispatch that they're investigating something
kind of like how their car cameras automatically turn on when the lights are turned on

I'm sure there was some other reason, and I'm sure we'll find out that reason and then be able to make a better judgment on whether it seems like it was warranted or not.
WTF? there HAS to be more to this.
Until then, just wait and see.

Reprimand for the driver, but the passenger should be jailed if the story stands, and I'm back the blue all the way.

The existence of cameras is a double edged sword that often helps to exonerate officers.
On a separate note, all public officials, especially those with the legal authority to shoot USA citizens (in certain situations), should be held to a standard FAR more extreme than that of any normal citizen.
They should be recorded at all times.

I agree 100% and I love my cops.

quote:What's the protocol on turning them on, as in, when do they need to turn them on?
Body camera not turned on in the event of a officer shooting which is not clear cut should be automatic prison time.
That would end officer's conveniently forgetting to turn them on.
Meaning...we don't know the full story here, obviously. I guess it could be possible they were in their car, and right as they pulled up she came running to the car and the altercation started, whatever that altercation may have been...in which case there would really be no time to turn on a body cam.
I don't know, just thinking aloud here.

Police have some explaining to do on this one.

he managed to "accidently" shoot around the driver, through the door and hit the woman?
I could see this maybe happening where the officer in the drivers seat was taller/longer legged than his partner in the passenger seat... so his seat would be positioned a few inches farther back. OR the passenger cop could be of slightly thicker build and therefor his legs would be slightly above the guy driving.
So the victim is petite to average for a female (I'm assuming) and is either bent over or crouching while talking to the driver.... The passenger seat cop, with pistol in hand already accidentally pulls the trigger while holding it parallel to his lap... A slight upward angle could result in it going between the drivers torso/steering wheel clearing the driver's legs and exiting through the door below the window.
It's still a complete frick up by officer who fired the shot and he should be charged with some degree of manslaughter at the very least.
ETA:
I think it's possible that he wasn't required have to have his body cam turned until either opening the door on his side of the patrol car or exiting the unit (as long as dash cam and whatever other onboard recorders are turned on).

I would love to know the OT's take on what stupid game she was playing to deserve a stupid prize? Based on the limited information, looks like this woman was murdered. But I am sure the cop will successfully use the time honored "I feared for my life" defense.

This officer is provided with a camera. Is he told to turn it on and wear it?
If so, he turned it off and shot a lady.

and we're talking about criminal liability for the LEO, not violations of a suspect's rights

The officers’ body cameras were not turned on at the time

Maybe when she walked up to the car, there was no reasonable anticipation that a situation was going to occur?

Body cameras aren't normally on while officers are in the car.

Not having a body cam on should be a fireable offense.

If this were a civilian, said person would be in custody with a murder charge. Whether or not the gun misfired and a lesser charge is warranted would be a detail for the DA's office and the civilian's lawyer to work out before trial.
Here, the cops aren't charged and they're on PAID leave. They killed a woman for no apparent reason and are still getting a paycheck directly funded by taxpayers. And many on here still act shocked that a significant portion of Americans hate and distrust police.

But these threads would be uninteresting then.
