Relocating to Houston soon from Lafayette and have noticed the presence of the dreaded HOA in every burb neighborhood we're looking at.

Do any of you have experiences living with HOAs around Houston and maybe give some advice on ones to avoid? Looking particularly in Cypress like Towne Lake, Bridgeland, maybe some others off 290. What is the general personality of typical HOAs in this part of the city?

If you arent trash a HOA shouldnt be a problem

If you like parking your boat in the street all the time you will have a problem

If you want to live in a nice house they're unavoidable. Maybe in New Canney or Richmond.

Death, taxes, and HOAs in Houston suburbs.

You can't even have a fricking yard flag in Bridgeland. I'd bet townelake is worse. If you're good about taking care of your house you'll generally be fine.

All that said, my wife and I are moving from Fairfield to Bridgeland once our youngest is out of daycare.

And as others have said, they're unavoidable pretty much in any semi-decent neighborhood in Houston. You can go about 10 miles down the road to Waller and probably avoid them.

dreaded HOA

There is a reason HOAs came into existence. If you value the investment in your home you should appreciate the protection a HOA gives you from your neighbors.

I realize some HOAs go off the rails and can become ridiculous but generally they are a great thing. I won't ever buy home in an area where I have close neighbors that doesn't also have a some kind of HOA.

I thought you said Houston.

I hope you aren't working downtown. 290 will never be finished

Cut your grass, pick up your trash cans, etc and you'll never even notice you live in a HOA neighborhood.

It's not a big deal.

The only things that are annoying is that you have to call or email the HOA so that they can approve changes you make to your house. Where I lived, if you wanted to paint your house, they had to approve the color. They don't want people painting their houses pink and stuff.

This might be most pro HOA thread I've seen on the OT. Most of the time everyone bashes them.

Some friends of mine live there. It's really nice and even cooler that each house has it's own dock.

Welcome to Houston when you come

Ive lived in 2 hoods with HOAs.

Only people that complained were the ones doing trashy things like trying to get above ground pools and do weird addons so Id say the HOA was fine

Lived in Cypress/Katy 20 years. Understand there is no zoning in Houston - suburbs are created by "master-planned" communities that keep porn shops from going in next to elementary schools - thus the HOAs.

Most HOAs are not a problem - in fact, the areas you mention are nice because of the HOA. As mentioned, don't trash your place, park cars in the street and raise goats in your yard and you'll be okay.

I live in a HOA in Katy. Doesn't bother me a bit. I keep my property clean and so do all my neighbors. When I come visit my family in Nola they're all very proud of their "freedom" from HOA tyranny, but then will complain about people leaving their trash cans out and not cutting their grass.

My family in Katy isn't a fan of the HOA. They're some OCD fricks according to him. That's in Cinco Ranch.

I'm not trash, my grass is cut and trashcans get picked up. I do like the little things like Christmas lights, backyard fire-pits, doing some woodworking in my garage.

Just worried more about the small QOL changes moving from the free Lafayette neighborhoods to Houston HOAs. I work from home, my poor wife will be the one working downtown.

I like niceness and no porno shops by my kid's schools though.
