2001 Seattle Mariners as well

As much as 2011 LSU is underrated, any team that has Jefferson as QB doesn't belong in that list.
That said, defense and special teams on a combined basis was likely the GOAT.

2005 USC was called the best ever by ESPN talking heads. Coming off a couple NCs with Leinart, Bush, White, Steve Smith, Cushing, Bing, etc.
And then they "misunderestimated" a certain Mr. Young.

They got shut out in the title game. That automatically disqualifies them from the conversation

2011 LSU might arguably be top 20 all time but it's not like its crazy to say they aren't. College football has been around a long time and there have been a lot of elite teams. I could find plenty of all time team rankings that have 2011 LSU well outside of the top 20 so let's not pretend it's a ridiculous position to take.

They still had little trouble with Georgia.

Nah that is pretty laughable. They went on the road and beat one of the best teams of the last 15 years and destroyed their SEC schedule. And when you look at the NFL talent that team had, it ranks as among the most prolific rosters ever. The factor that obfuscates the discussion is how much of an imbecile Miles was in playing Jefferson over Lee.

Do you have to win it all to be considered the best team ever?
Absolutely.

Does not winning the title make them less great?
Of course it does.
Best regular season is nice and all, but not finishing that out and winning the championship absolutely hurts the legacy.
And you should add the 2001 Mariners to your list.

How the hell can anyone say 2011 LSU was arguably the best team that year
They lost by 21 in the national championship. That is definitely not "arguably the best team that year".

This is an absurd topic.
If you are not the best team in a given year (meaning you do not have a championship trophy)...you cannot (by definition) be the best ever.
That is like the runner up in 2014 Miss America saying she is the best contestant ever.

2011 LSU had one of the best regular seasons ever. 13-0, victories over Oregon (neutral* site) and West Virginia (on the road), running through the SEC with only MS State (on the road) and Alabama (on the road) being less than 24-point wins. Then beating Georgia 41-10 in the SEC Championship game. Victories over 8 ranked teams including #2 once and #3 twice.
If that BCSCG goes the other way and LSU beats Alabama again, that's an easy top 5 all-time team.
But, it didn't go LSU's way, which brings us right back to the original point, of fricking course you have to win it all to be considered the best team ever.

Depends how you lose.
Basketball you can lose on a crazy fluke play like Houston in 1983 to NC State.
Football you can lose on a bad fumble while running out the clock like the Niners against the Giants in 1990.
Or David Tyree helmet catch.
You can lose because you don't make 4th and 2 by an inch like 2005 USC...I mean everyone remembers the GOAT drive at the end to win in the final seconds but the game was inches away from being over in USC's favor.
In games of inches or fluke catches or lucky bounces in basketball - the difference between winning and losing can often be miniscule and doesn't really mean one team is better than the other.
Unless you get your arse kicked like 2011 LSU (why would you include them with the 2007 Pats? They lost a close defensive battle on a helmet catch; Bama sat on LSU all day and didn't let them cross the 50.)
Point is any team that barely loses can still be considered the best...but if you get exposed or your arse beaten...uh-uh.

Without question.
You can't end finish in 2nd place and be considered the best ever.

You could make an argument for football.
But in basketball, seven game series... Less chance of a fluke happening

both guys were garbage. the bottom line is that a team with either of them playing qb isn't going to be considered among the GOATs.

this didn't happen. people were saying they had one of the most impressive resumes of all time (which was true), but nobody was calling them the greatest team.

Nah, Lee wasn't garbage by any means. It's rare to have a team that's among the all-time greats with a mediocre QB (2001 Miami), but this is one of those cases.
