says more about our culture than about the NBA. America seems to "need" the ONE guy that is the greatest. Arnold palmer, tiger woods, etc, etc.

MJ became MJ due to skill, and marketing......

There were players before him that absolutely dominated in similar fashion: wilt, Russell, magic, Kareem, etc

However, nobody had the machine known as media to go along with said domination

Jordan was more than just a player. He was a transcendent star. He was a competitor and a personality and a marketing machine all in one.

In my opinion, the player who came closest to Jordan in terms of fame and play style is Dr. J.

Now, I don't think he was the best player. I think Kareem was the best player, but Kareem didn't have the personality. Magic was special but it wasn't even clear if he was the best player on the team, with Kareem there. Bird was blue collar. Plus, both Magic and Bird were sort of contemporaries of Jordan. Wilt was a phenomenon like a man amongst boys in the early days of the NBA.

Dr. J was one full decade before Jordan and he was the "it" player of that time. Nowhere near Jordan's presence, but if you ask me, I think he's the precursor to Jordan, more than anyone.

Not sure why that matters. The rest of the league wasn't any worse than what magic and bird played against and MJ was clearly better against them

Popularity-wise Magic and Bird were on the down-swing. Jordan was THE superstar at the right time when sports marketing was exploding. Hell, now he's as well known for his shoes as his play. That's not a downplay of Jordan. But there were guys before him who were arguably as or more dominant in their era. Wilt and Kareem literally changed the rules of basketball. Russell was thought of as the greatest winner in team sports. However, Jordan is universally thought of as the greatest ever in large part because Nike and the NBA marketed him as such at a time when the NBA was not only at its peak in popularity domestically, but really starting to become immensely popular world-wide

I gotta say Dr. J. The first thing that made Jordan a phenomenon was his dunks. Dr. J was the first king of dunking.

Umm you are so wrong in this but it's no use to even attempt to correct you.

Jordan was Wooden winner in 84 and the star of the 84 Olympic team. So may want to look up things.

He's made no points on why Jordan was considered greatest player other than Nike

Jordan's play is what got him into Nike he was smart not making commentary. But to allege Nike and NBA marketing made Jordan so great is blantantly ignorant and nearsighted.

Bill Russell won 11 NBA titles. He was the league MVP 5 times (same as Jordan); He was the college POY and won the NCAA title, twice, at the University of SAN Francisco. If championships and awards are the most important metric, then Russell is the undisputed greatest ever

Kareem won 6 MVP's, 6 NBA titles, 3 NCAA titles and was the college POY 3 times. The NCAA outlawed the dunk for 10 years because of him.

Both have comparable accomplishments as Jordan. They just didn't have the huge marketing presence

If you want to argue that Jordan is the best ever, I certainly understand that. But to discount the effect that his immense marketing had on his legacy is disingenuous

I never said it didn't but you're implying that it's the foundation. Which it isn't.

Russell never lead the league in scoring. Russell never won Finals MVP 6 times (but he never had the chance). Russel was dominated by Chamberlain, Jordan had no peer.

Jordan was AllStar two times more (14-12)
I think Russell was 8 time All Defensive Team to Jordan's 9 (maybe reversed)

You're wrong Toby. I'm glad to see you're on your anti Jordan stint still

I guess you forget they changed the rules for Jordan also. You're so busy defending the new brand you've lost objectivity and become what you claim you're not, close minded.

I heard it was a lot like football and there was no consensus GOAT before Jordan.

That's not even close to being true. Wilt had numerous HOF teammates and his supporting cast was usually just as good as Russell's yet he always found a way to lose to Russell. There's more to basketball than pure numbers. Russell was a far better team player and his impact on the court was always greater than Wilt's.

This says Chamberlain dominated head to head

Chamberlain was 7 time All NBA to Russell's 3
