So now, in 2017, dairy is suddenly the devil.

Just got lectured on how milk is horrible and humans should stop drinking it. Evidently the enlightened folks are now rejecting dairy entirely for a number of reasons: indigestibility (see Paleo Diet), presence of unhealthy hormones and antibiotics, inhumane treatment of dairy cows, global warming (I guess from cow farts?), etc. This girl's main argument was that her veganism was a "moral stance" based on our treatment of animals.
Somebody please educate me on why industrial meat and dairy production is suddenly a bad thing. Man has been milking cows for thousands of years. But suddenly folks have decided that we cannot exploit or eat anything with a face.
You can have my meat, my eggs, my milk, my ice cream, my butter, and my cheese when you pry it from my cold dead fingers. #MURICA #HUMANSUPREMACY #frickVEGANS

I can't wait until there's a widespread narrative that studies show that plants have feelings.

The fresh cut grass smell is from a chemical release the grass has when it's been 'injured'.

I've heard that it is responsible for the high rates of osteoporosis

i drink milk a lot. i'm specific about the kind of milk i drink....
but your friend was referring to these facts:
quote:
A widespread switch to vegetarianism would cut emissions by nearly two-thirds, it said.
In three decades, emissions related to agriculture and food production are likely to account for about half of the world’s available “carbon budget” - the limited amount of carbon dioxide and its equivalents that can be poured into the atmosphere if we are to hold global warming to no more than 2C.
While energy generation, transport and buildings have long been a target for governments, businesses and campaigners looking to reduce emissions, the impact from food production has often been left out. But on current trends, with intensive agriculture increasingly geared towards livestock rearing, food production will be a major concern.
The research, led by scientists at the Oxford Martin School, found that shifting to a mostly vegetarian diet, or even simply cutting down meat consumption to within accepted health guidelines, would make a large dent in greenhouse gases.
Adhering to health guidelines on meat consumption could cut global food-related emissions by nearly a third by 2050, the study found, while widespread adoption of a vegetarian diet would bring down emissions by 63%.
The additional benefit of going further, with the widespread adoption of veganism, brought a smaller incremental benefit, with emissions falling by about 70% in the projections.

Without cheese, what is the point of life?

According to the OT as of about a month ago, it's racist too. Something about how blacks don't get osteoporosis or something.

quote:This is undeniable, especially for people who suffer from acne or sinus issues. (processed dairy isn't a root cause of acne or sinus problems but it makes acne and sinus issue much much worse.) The main hormones are used to make cows grow 3-4 times faster and produce far more milk than normal.
presence of unhealthy hormones
It's not all of a sudden. You just haven't been paying attention for the last 2 decades. It's been an issue so long that we're already years past the point of nearly all chain stores such as Walmart, Publix, etc no longer getting milk from suppliers who use the worse of the hormones. You can easily google for specific information.

Dairy is bad for you and agriculture is the biggest overall contributor to gas house emissions. Don't frick with it along with most of my fellow Boulderites

How? That's quite a blanket statement.

Baw, my people have been eating and drinking lactose so long that it's almost necessary. I'll be fine.

Carbon emissions, at least. We have too many people in the world to sustain a First World diet, just in terms of required arable land. I don't know what's gonna give.

Osteoporosis is less prevalent amongst blacks and hispanics.

A surprisingly small percentage of the global population can actually digest that lactose as adults.
Reality is that raising cattle for slaughter is terribly inefficient and a poor use of natural resources.
