Saw a matte black lift crane parked near the corner of Andrew Higgins Dr. and Convention Center Blvd. yesterday with a weird attachment on the end of it. Thought for a second it had something to do with the monuments but now it makes more sense.

Serious question, on those grounds did the soldiers of Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri fight to abolish or keep slavery intact? Or were they defending their rights to own slaves in the Union?

So confused.

At least one sticky thread would be nice. That way we can free up the board to discuss monkey wolf fights and such

Hopefully you understand that's not all the rebellion was about.

If that were my bar I'd get a court order to stay open beforehand and if not sue after. That'd be a bullshite move.

There is a 0% chance of him answering that and about a negative 20% chance he would get it right if he did

The spotlight isn't so favorable and Mitch seems to have pissed people off on this issue. Instead of getting friendly coverage from a one statue a week removal we are in "get it over ASAP" mode.

Enjoy your ~$250K cush and meaningless post mayoral SJW job Mitch.

The leader of the other team wanted to ship the former slaves down to the Caribbean and South America to work on the sugar and banana plantations. Where the real inhumane treatment was and where life expectancy was a shadow of the life expectancy of slaves in the south.

But sureeeee

ETA: the plywood is a nice touch as well. really brings the block into focus

It's sad now it looks more like a ghetto without something to replace it. If they want to take the whole thing down take the whole thing down. Then clean up the grounds around it. Level the ground out and plant some grass.

Now this makes the city look even more trashy!

Does the City need a building/demolition permit to perform this work? I don't know if a private contractor is being used or if they're all firemen, but a contractor would certainly need to pull a permit even if they're working for the City.

Net could hit a golf ball to Ponchatrain Blvd or Mid-city from my house, but in Metairie.

What stopped me from buying in New Orleans was the problems that everyone complains about. I was planning on doing it in a year or so anyway, and just renting out my current house. My parents were also planning on buying the house in Lakeview my sister rents, and getting another place for my younger sister uptown when she moves back from college. None of those are happening now out of disgust for the city.

It's an amazing city in many regards. This whole debacle pushed me over the top, and I have no desire to support anything about it now.

Separate issue. The South seceded, particularly the first seven states to protect slavery and the racial hierarchy. The Union fought to keep the Union not to abolish slavery. Over time the focus shifted, though not wholly, after the Emancipation Proclamation and once Northern soldiers started invading the South and seeing the horrors of slavery, many became abolitionists and this is evident in their letters home. Especially when reading their letters in regards to the election of 1864 it is clear that many are anti-slavery and want to finish the war out to destroy slavery. Additionally, why poor whites in the South fought is varied but the political leaders certainly seceded and waged war in order to protect slavery of that there is no doubt. The primary sources are overwhelming on that point.
