It's a pain to be on the board. Most people have a power trip while people like me got suckered into it. Rest want everyone else to do something while they are lazy. We had one member trying to get all his friends on the board to pocket the money on the side by saying he was providing services when he was not. I finally told the person I had a CPA and I would like to pay for an audit. At that point that person quit which left me having to clean the books up, paying my CPA out of my pocket to try to trace where money went. Then I still had to deal with making sure green spaces are maintained, events are done, and services are maintained. It turned into me basically babysitting grown adults to make sure things would get done or keep other people with power trips inline.

I would never be president, if I did ever do it. I'd just be there to be a bullshite detector, which is exactly why my 2 neighbors asked me to do it.

The current president is actually pretty damn good at it, but he's so flamboyantly gay and aggressive with arguments that no one stands up to him about anything.

I'll admit he gets shite done though.

Yes, I had to pay for a forensic audit.
I own a business and had a CPA at the time which helped cut down my cost to get things corrected.
At the point we had information to charge the person we took it to the county DA.
He got 1 yr probation and had to pay the money we found misplaced back.

Then I had to straighten things out with the IRS, so future members would not get fined in audits. The next board had a clean slate.
I paid out thousands to get this fixed!

Remember if you get on these boards you are responsible for accurate financial reporting even for the actions of the past boards if not corrected.

HOA complexes are generally all the same. They wig me out. Cookie cutter, cheaply built, boring homes. They (better) be neat and clean, but if you don't have some sort of pool, tennis court, workout facility ... what are you really shelling out the money for? The lawns are generally too small to shell out $100+ a month for. What are you getting out of the deal? A well-manicured middle ground separating the homes? A flowered entrance gate?

Let's say you pay HOA dues and in February, when the grass isn't growing and there is some "trash grass" that spreads from your neighbor's yard into your yard and the HOA sends you a letter, but not your neighbor.. Would that motivate you to keep paying your dues?

Why let someone else tell you what you can and can't do with your property?

To help ensure the value of your property does not go down or by providing services (road maintenance, maintaining lakes/ponds, cutting grass in common areas, fence maintenance, gate/entrance maintenance, community pool maintenance)?

In Louisiana you do have to file with the Secretary of State and you have to have open meetings, financial disclosures, etc. HOA

Do you have a link to this law? I don't believe the part about requiring open meetings is accurate.

Sounds like big government.

Never lived where one was required, never had a problem with neighbors or they with me.

More like protection of investment.

Just because you have not experienced this doesn’t mean it's not a valid concern. I have had several eccentric neighbors that would have gone nuts with no HOA to hold them in check.

There's standard city ordinances for nuisance properties, a process that doesn't involve HOA's.

There's a whole hell of a lot your neighbor can do to decrease your home value before violating those ordinances.

Hell yea they are stupid... Why you want to pay a fee to live in a subdivision, where the houses are so close you cant cut the grass between them?? Stupid right there. So shut your mouth and pay the extra fees for the folks who have the nuts to tell the HOA to go screw themselves.

Especially in New Orleans. Good luck getting anyone to step in on a decaying property there.

People that say HOAs are stupid have never spent 400,000 dollars on a house and then had their neighbor never cut their grass and park a 1974 suburban that doesnt have any tires in their front yard. They used the dang thing for a storage area.

That is my friends problem. Last time I was at his house, his neighbors had a busted bag of trash in their front yard and he said it had been there for three days.

what about when the developer controls the HOA illegally and refuses to relinquish control but your neighbors are too lazy and stupid to fight them. and the developer "hires" its own employees to do CAM work at 10X market rates? Is it still trash to stop paying?

Then don't move into a subdivision with an HOA.

Those dues cover landscaping and upkeep of common grounds, lakes, etc that everyone in the subdivision benefits from. If you don't want to pay for those things, don't move in. It's really simple.

If there is a house I like in a place I like, I would not let some HOA prevent me from buying a home there. I have no desire to pay dues nor do I want anyone to tell me what to do with my home.

Not a HOA president, but nice try. I don't particularly even like HOA's. But how can you justify people who move in, knowing full well about HOA dues, and then refusing to pay?

Because with anything else you spend your money on, you pay, and expect a service or goods back.

HOA dues, in some instance, completely bypass that standard formula. Yet again in my situation, 107 dollars per month for a small plot of grass with the cheapest playground equipment possibly able to be installed. At our rates, you'd assume there would be lawn service, a community pool, or anything more than what we are receiving.

If one of my neighbors decided to not pay, based on what we are getting back in return, I couldn't fault them.

I'm not poor though, so I don't have any thoughts of not paying.
