Holy shite! People may actually have to manage their time better and get work done before getting on a plane. Or even worse, we may be forced to read a real book with paper pages.
It's happening!

So they want people to now check their expensive electronic devices in their luggage??

electronic devices larger than phones aren’t allowed in the cabin, and need to be checked in the cargo hold

This should be interesting as I'm going to Europe for a week next week.

I manage my time BY doing work on the plane. That is some of my most productive time!

Have to go to sweden in june for a conference. This report makes it sound like you can leave the US with electronics fine, it's just the return flights that are going to be a problem. Having to put your laptop in a checked bag on your return flight from london? Just better hope the baggage handlers don't steal anything

My international trips are usually less than 4 days of travel, so I rarely check a bag which saves lots of time, especially when coming home and having to reclaim baggage in ATL or JFK. This will blow, especially if I can't watch my movies on the iPad!

This doesn't really make sense, given that TSA is so unbelievably incompetent. Their failure rate is 95%. They are basically worthless. I'm not sure how we can trust them to perform more reliable screening than flights originating in Europe.

This is crap. I don't typically work on the plane, but I never check a bag for a 7 day or less trip.

This would be a huge PITA. I rarely check a bag and always get some work done on the flight. It saves me time and passes the time between watching the same crap movies that United doesn't ever seem to update. Not to mention, I'd rather not have expensive devices getting tossed around like a rag doll in a checked bag.

Aren't y'all glad United and American started removing the tv screens and is relying on "personal device entertainment"? Pretty soon there won't be any entertainment if you can't bring your laptop/ipad onboard

how does this even make sense
a lot of us don't just work at the office, and that has nothing to do with poor time management

My guess is you don't travel for work very often.

I haven't taken a real paper book (or guidebook) on a plane in years and years....and I used to travel w/a separate bag just for books. Reading in e-form is ideal for travel (whether business or pleasure). This ban will suck for those of us who never check a bag. Guess I'll have to get used to reading on my phone...maybe it is time for a bigger phone screen.

IF I CAN"T HAVE AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE, HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO DOUBLE-BILL MY CLIENTS BY WORKING ON MY LAPTOP FOR ONE OF THEM WHILE THE OTHER IS PAYING ME TO FLY SOMEWHERE?!

My last two flights from China have been on a 747 with United. No tv screens and BOTH times, the "personal entertainment" would never load on my phone or laptop. After the first time, I made damn sure I had the latest app, blah blah. That is one boring flight with nothing for 10-12 hrs.

Partner at my firm one time check his laptop by accident. Got to destination only to find his hard drive had been wiped out en route. How are they going to prevent this?

I'm more concerned with concentrating a bunch of ion lithium batteries in the cargo hold. Also, how in the hell is a smart phone all that different than your average laptop when it comes to the ability to do nefarious things?
