To strengthen AQ and IS?

Help the crazy arse rebels?

Is the policy to rid Syria of Assad?

Will Trump come back to Congress for authority?

Trump is looking like he went to Jared?

To pay lip service to people who need symbolic military action to feel better about themselves. Aka the GOPe and the warmongering wing of the party

Assad broke his agreement with us not you use chemicals.
Trump just reminded them that you don't piss on us!

Why do you have a problem with this?

Maybe to do exactly what they said...destroy the airfield that provided the plane which was used to drop poison gas on innocent civilians?

Proportional retribution and specific deterrence. It's supposed to give the Syrian regime a moment of pause before they next choose to flout international law. Assad may be a hard case, though.

To make Assad think twice before he targets civilians or uses chemical weapons again

Bassad is a proxy of Iran...who is hard at work refining their inter-ballistic missiles and nuclear warheads...while screaming "death to America" in the streets. Bassad gasses kids, and not a peep from his benefactors...Iran or Russia.

I can just imagine ten years from now when Iran is nuked to the max like N. Korea, and ready to bring their Madhi down to clean up what they perceive as a heathen civilization. (We might be).

All that is needed for evil to triumph is for good folk to stand by and do nothing.

Flash!

The more I'm reading, the more obvious this was a lot about the show. Closely coordinated with the Russians. Russian advanced air defense not employed. Runways not damaged. Personnel evacuated. Statement this was a one-off.

Meanwhile, it's a clear message to Assad and NoKo's FatBoy

To enforce what was said to the Syrian government by the international community and the US (Obama administration) about the consequences of using chemical warfare to slaughter civilians and to destroy the military target responsible for said chemical weapons attack. May not prevent continued atrocities in Syria but you can't just keep saying you are going to punish those responsible for such atrocities and then do nothing when they occur. Today they believe what the rest of the world has been telling them about consequences. It was a very focused message and also a measured tactical destruction of a military target responsible for what we saw earlier this week which the whole world condemned.

The strategic reason is to destroy the airfield used in the chemical attack.

The political reason is to show Assad that there will be retaliation if chemical weapons are used.

For starters it ruins the Trump is with Russian MSM narrative.

Next, Russia was given 24 hour advance notice and a lot of the bombs hit one spot at the airport.

Trump was dealing with China at the time, so it could also be a show of strength against an uppity China.

The last gas chemical bombing in Syria to make big noise was ruled by UN to have been a false flag, this one doesn't seem much different. Especially when you consider the rescue crew was not even using gloves or had gas masks on while touching those people with "chemicals" on them. This almost seems like false flag rebuttal to a false flag . It is a whole lot of grand standing.

To deter Assad from murdering innocent civilians. If he orders another chemical attack then I'd hope we'd launch 500 missiles the next time. He'll get the point.

I work in an area of technology (data acquisition, management of data, optics, sensors for C4ISR, space defense, government defense surveillance) that is used by the defense and intelligence agencies to enhance our threat assessment capabilities far greater than many here realize.

If you accept as fact (making an assumption) that data hit General Mattis' desk showing proven Syrian activity to arm and fire nerve agents into their population (highly likely knowing what I know of our current capabilities for enhanced data analysis) and the data gave high probability to imminent additional threats of genocidal attacks by Assad's armed forces, then because of the agreements between the U.S.,Russia, UK, France and others with Syria to eliminate these nerve agents, the U.S. acted in accordance to be responsive to failed diplomacy with surgical strikes to eliminate the threat.

On the other hand, if you believe that our military doesn't have that data gathering capability and that this is a false flag operation, you are either mistaken or forming an extreme position based on conjecture, not actual data.

Liberals love it because we finally enforced the red line that Obama didn't have the balls to.

Trump fans love it because their boy finally got to blow shite up like a real president.

Everyone else knows this is going to lead to more US involvement in another sandy shithole.

The point is that the Russian's turned off their anti-missile defense systems and the Syrians evacuated the target to allow this meaningless airstrike to happen. It was announced by Washington the same night that the Russians were told of the strike in advance. This way Putin can issue a strongly worded statement and Trump can pretend to do something. This is theater, pure and simple.

Perhaps the goal is to make it appear that Trump is not in cahoots with the Russians. But really the deep level of coordination undermines that narrative.

Distraction, perhaps? That's all it looks like. It had no substantive or strategic value.

Of course this was an easy lift militarily: a few dozen missiles, one air base as a target. Yet our previous president refused to do it; this one acted. He did not let worries about the possible Russian reaction scare him off. He understood that this would not end the war in Syria, but he did it anyway. He was willing to act alone, without demanding a UN Security Council meeting or congressional vote. And of course, leadership pays off: he will have strong bipartisan support on the Hill.

Henceforth when he speaks of American conditions and demands, interests and desires, more attention will be paid. Every official in every foreign government has been trying to figure him out since November 8. This week he gave them a lot to think about. He took command, and issued orders. He didn't draw a red line and then withdraw it, but instead called Assad's action intolerable—that overused word—and then proceeded to show that when he said intolerable, he meant it.
Today, Trump became the leader of the free world....
