quote:We are not in a flood zone... we now have the insurance. All I'm saying is that if you received FEMA aid, you agreed to get flood insurance no matter where you are located. It won't stop you from selling your home, but it may mean that you're SOL if a disaster happens again.
but that's a pretty intense gamble

For some reason that wasn't mentioned in my FEMA award letter. I spoke to several other people who did have that specificily mentioned in their FEMA letter

It's a federal law.
I'm not doubting you... I'm not sure why my award letter didn't say I had to get flood insurance (I did regardless) and several other award letters I saw said flood insurance would be required to obtain.

Then hell I stand corrected. Why then did either even apply for licensing, why was that point brought up and why was the licensing boards attorney involved?

That's a lot of money being given to people who abhor entitlements and welfare handouts. Just by the numbers I can easily see 1.3B leftover as only about 35% +/- will be grabbed...

If it helps people who are a benefit to society get back on their feet and continue to be beneficial, I'm for it but like you say, I don't want a handout... which is why I didn't apply needlessly for a trailer when I could borrow one even though it was much smaller and why I straight up told the LA Shelter at home people to stay off my property. I don't care if it was "free cleaning and supplies" or whatever else they promised. It was bullshite.

What pisses me off to no end is that I been paying into that BS state insurance from Katrina. Half the time I forgot to claim that crap on my state taxes.

NOW, you are getting to the typical LA corruption. The team that scored 3rd place was named Sullivan Horn. Their bid was $100MM more than the winning bidder --AND-- they had nowhere near the past experience with this sort of thing. However, they did have two aces in the hole: 1) Their lobbyist is close with the governor, and 2) The attorney for the state contractor's licensing board had a son working for the Sullivan bros. (not to mention that this attorney has been to jail for fraud, etc. in the past).
Anyway, the governor could have easily said the protest against the winning bidder doesn't hold water because there is no reason a program manager would need a contractor's license. Again, there is precedent in which program mangers over rebuild projects didn't have such a license. In other cases, the program manager may have held a commercial contractor's license but not a residential license.
I am not alleging the governor did anything illegal at all. In fact, let's agree he didn't since he didn't have anything to gain personally. However, I do wonder how much this lobbyist swayed his opinion because he elected not to intervene. When the contractor's board weighed in (despite a lawyer with a serious conflict of interest), the state decided to go for a rebid. It's just odd that he didn't step in and avoid all of this controversy.
Long story short, I think the lobbyist for Sullivan Horn felt that the fix was in. It likely would have worked except the the media picked up on it and it hit the papers.

Does the website work for anyone? I can't seem to get any of the links to work, and wasn't sure if it was user error or not.

Who is responsible for maintaining the waterway? That's the entity you have a claim against, if anyone.
The Amite is navigable, and thus property of the state of Louisiana. However, as a navigable waterway, the Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for maintaining its suitibility for navigation, BUT the Army Corps of Engineers is all but immune to law suits per federal statutes.
Basically, he's SOOL.

Another flood event, even half the size of last years, would put Louisiana residents in a tail spin.
Many received FEMA money, they cant get it again, forced to carry flood insurance. I'm sure insurance wont give much and premiums would skyrocket.
Wonder how much more per month are people paying for flood insurance?
Pay construction costs, plus loan repayments, and flood insurance has to be causing some troubles financially.

That's why they do it with the credit instead of the feds paying it straight to the state.

From what I just read it looks like a family of 5 has to make less than about $50,000 depending on where you live to qualify.
