Finished watching it for the first time and wow was that nothing but "Close Encounters" meets "Sophie's Choice".

How did this get a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes?

It had great cinema photography, etc, but it never really took off.

I thought it was a very solid scifi flick.

I found very little sci-fi in it. I figured it was going to have something to do with Mankind/Earth/Harmony/etc, but it never really took off. The science part of it had no foundation (like in "Interstellar").

Spoiler

It was just some chick with what we thought were flashbacks to help save the world.

I thought it was overrated as well.

It was decent, but not really SciFi. Just a movie about the power of choice and the idea of fate.

I thought it was pretty humdrum, and the ***spoilers ahead!*** idea that learning an alien language could allow you to see forwards and backwards in time is pretty fricking stupid. They might as well have said that the aliens taught them magic spells or something.

All in all, stupid concept aside, it was a movie that just... was. It was just interesting enough to keep me engaged while I was watching it, but no more than that.

Was it because the movie didn’t have a giant blue laser shooting up towards the sky that had to be stopped?

I would recommend going back to watch it to get a feel for the theme. What made this a different sort of Sci-fi blockbuster was that the theme was language. And to borrow a phrase from True Detectives; the language showed that time in a flat circle. It was a mature theme that didn't have a pretentious message or angle to go off of. Frankly, it's probably the best sci-fi movie to come out the decade so far.

I agree. It was a lazy extraterrestrial film. Heard great things about it, and after watching it, wish I didn't waste my time.

I am pretty sure everyone picks this up. They pretty much tell you verbatim in the movie.

*Spoiler* The movie was more focused on the fact that even though she knew her own fate, she lived it anyways. That is basically the whole movie. Nothing else of substance really happened.

It is a character development movie hiding behind the sci-fi genre.

It really isn't a science fiction movie.

And international relations theory

The whole bit on language was very intriguing to me

Thought it was ok. The whole "repay us in 3000 years" thing was kind of bs. Still don't buy into the idea that anyone is going to want to shoot at a far superior race without being provoked.

I enjoyed it, but this part irked me. If the aliens know when they will be in need of help, how can they not fix the problem themselves - especially if they have 1000 years to do so?

I had high expectations for this movie and was excited to see it. I came out thinking that it was...pretty decent.

Better than I thought it would be but not a great movie. I'm capable of suspending reality like the next guy but there were just to many holes and honestly believe the music made it.
