Why are detectives and police allowed to lie to suspects but flipped is illegal?

Not fair to me. They are allowed to intentionally lie to and mislead suspects in investigations and interrogations. But if a witness or suspect gives false or misleading statements, it spells more charges.
Seems like a gross double standard.

A cop told a teenage kid I know when he entered a music festival, "Look kid, I know you got some stuff on you, if you give me what you have right now, I'll cut a deal with you and won't arrest you."
Kid pulls out his drugs(not smart), and the cop arrests him with full charges.

Detective: "I have 5 witnesses, including a good friend of yours, that submitted statements stating you WERE in fact on scene as the incident took place".
Suspect: "Ok Ok!! I DID murder my wife and kids!"
(Statement of confession obtained)
Detective: "You did the right thing by confessing. Btw...I lied. There were NO witnesses to the murder you confessed to".
Doesn't sound like an unfair swap of information to me...

I had a friend that almost went to prison due to talking too much. If he had just asked for a lawyer and kept his mouth shut they would have never gotten anything on him. They lied to him and even told him if the undercover cops had to get on the witness stand they would lie to convict him.

Not in LA... Unless you're speaking to a federal agent

So far, all of the examples are of people who actually did something wrong before the cops were ever involved, where's the double standard?

My brother went through a similar situation. He believed he was helping the cops and they used everything he said to turn around and files charges against him. The charges were eventually dropped after 2 years, but the damage was done. It pretty much derailed any career aspirations he had of joining the military. Bottom line, keep your mouth shut even if you're not guilty. You aren't helping the cops or yourself.

We watch a lot of crime shows. If I've learned anything it's that if I were ever questioned regarding a serious crime I would immediately ask for an attorney.

All of this can be avoided if you simply realize the police are not there to find out who committed a crime, they are there to find someone likely to accuse of committing the crime and let a jury decide.
The police are not 'just trying to help' or 'just trying to find the guy who did it.' They want to know if you look good for something, and then its the jury's job to decide.
Treat them politely, but I would never say a word other than basic information like my name and identification. You want to know where I was last night or if I know a "John Doe"? I don't know what this is about and I want a lawyer before I say anything.

Detective: Now kid, I know you say you didn't do this and I know we've been here for 18 hours and you've denied everything, but I just can't let you leave here without telling me something. I tell you what, if you just want to apologize to the victim's family, we'll make sure you get out.
Suspect: Ok, well I am sorry for them even though I am innocent of doing anything. I just want to get out here so I'll write them this apology. (Writes letter)
Detective: Kid, I'm sorry, but I lied to you. You ain't going home, we're arresting you because you've confessed.

First thing I learned in Criminal Law in Law School.....never talk to the cops without an attorney....never....even if you are innocent. the cop's job is to solve a crime and your innocence is secondary, at best, to them

They should teach all kids that the second you are taken into police custody to say the following words...and only the following words, " I WANT A LAWYER!!!!!!"
Every cop knows to say this, so every citizen can as well.
