Celestine Omin was accustomed to tackling tough engineering problems. Just not the two that the border agent had put in front of his face — or at least not now, after having spent 24 hours cramped in an economy seat on Qatar Airways.

It was Sunday, Feb. 26, and the 28-year-old software engineer had left his home in Lagos, Nigeria, to come to the United States for the first time. It was a work trip. For the last six months, Omin had been working for Andela, a startup that connects the top tech talent in Africa with employers in the U.S. Andela accepts less than 1 percent of applicants into its program and is backed by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. For this particular role, Omin was helping NYC-based fintech startup First Access create a JavaScript application for emerging markets and had secured a short-term visa.

After landing, Omin waited for 20 minutes and then reached the front of the line, where a Customs and Border Protection officer asked him a series of questions. It was here that Omin realized that the job might be challenging, but getting into America could now be impossible. No one at Andela had prepared him for the new reality.

if he's truly a software engineer that question should be a cinch.

I have no idea what the frick this means. So I don't have any issue with U.S. Customs doing their job. Maybe someone can explain why I should be outraged.

frick these open border asshats. Every other country in the world has zero issue aggressively questioning people seeking entry into their country but when the US does it they get up in arms. News flash, people come here to do bad things. We have every right to question their motives. At least we don't openly demand bribes like some of the shite hole places I have been.

tough shite Nigerian prince.

I was asked "what are you doing in Canada and when are you leaving Canada" when I went to Canada. The nerve of those Canadians.

This screams of BS.

Did they give him an unordered BST and asked him to balance it? If so this should take any SE a matter of seconds. That's a fundamental data structure that is taught at the frosh level.

Should be a valid question if you claim you are a software engineer should be very simple to answer.

I suppose they asked him to order a BST which is just a matter of comparison of keys.

And no one would prepare us Americans to go to that sh*thole of a country Nigeria. Pretty sad when foreigners also are snowflakes.

Nigeria does have some great food though truth be told.
