It was the detective...flicking the lighter...I dont think its a set up for another season or anything...just showing that she was watching.

Gotcha, that makes sense.

Maybe a dumb question but do you feel it was really confirmed that wife beater was the rapist? I felt like she projected several people to be the rapist throughout the series (maybe I'm misremembering).

I enjoyed how they set Kidman's character up to be so trapped at the party. Really effective; it conveyed in a very smothering way. Also I'm generally not a fan of Shailene Woodley but she can give pretty intense facial expressions when she wants to.

Yes. The minute she heard the voice she changed.

And her memories of him became clear.

Very obvious he is the rapist.

I also found it very weird that they didn't just admit what happened. He was beating Kidman and hit all the other women as well and Kravitz just pushed him and he tripped backwards down the stairs. I feel like that is not a crime.

Soundtrack is unbelievable. Its on Spotify. Chloe was the best character in the show

Affair?

Perry RAPED Jane years ago....resulting in her getting pregnant with Ziggy. That's not an affair.

Well, affair or not, he cheated on his wife with her...

ETA: I meant "affair or not" not "rape or not"

This article explains the difference between book vs show ending.

What the show left out...

quote:

Bonnie witnessed domestic violence growing up.

quote:

Nathan visits Madeline and Ed the morning after trivia night, when the women have all decided to pretend they didn’t see what happened when Perry “fell.”
“Bonnie’s father was violent,” Nathan tells them. “Very violent. I don’t think I even know half the stuff he did. Not to Bonnie. To her mum. But Bonnie and her little sister saw it all.” He says he thinks she “snapped” when she saw Perry hit Celeste, and that he’s sure she didn’t mean for him to die.

Bonnie also goes to visit Celeste that day. She asks her to tell police the truth, and says that’s what she plans to do.

quote:

Bonnie confronts Perry before shoving him – and later admits she did it.
The big moment in the finale left something out from the book. Instead of rushing in from the wings, Bonnie confronts Perry, saying she can tell he’s hit Celeste before, and that’s why his son is hurting other little girls. Perry denies that his children ever saw him abuse their mother, prompting Bonnie to say “Your children see. … We see” before pushing him.
Eventually, in the book version, Bonnie confesses to the police. She’s found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 200 hours of community service: “According to Madeline, Bonnie had performed her community service with great pleasure, Abigail by her side the whole time.”

quote:

Renata apologizes and moves away.
The book contains a short note where Renata tells Ziggy she’s sorry for being “not very nice to you” at the kindergarten orientation. She also invites him to bring his light saber to Amabella’s “Star Wars”-themed going-away party before the family moves to London.
Later, another mother — Thea, one of the background chorus of women talking to police throughout the series— says Renata’s marriage is “kaput"”after her husband sleeps with their nanny.

quote:

Celeste sets up a trust fund for Ziggy.
In the book, after Perry dies, Celeste moves the boys to the oceanfront apartment she’d rented and sells their house and other properties. The boys have some behavior problems at school, so she transfers them to a new one. She also speaks to a group of hospital workers about the signs of domestic violence.
Max and Josh have a trust fund set up for them. Celeste also sets up one of equal value for Ziggy, which she tells Jane about.
From the book:
“It’s Ziggy's money. If Perry knew Ziggy was his son he would have wanted him to treated exactly the same as Max and Josh,” Celeste had told her. “Perry was – ”
But then she’d found herself unable to speak, because how could she say to Jane that Perry was generous to a fault, and scrupulously fair. Her husband had always been so fair, except for those times when he was monstrously unfair.
But Jane had reached across the cafe table and taken her hand and said, “I know he was,” almost as if she did understand everything that Perry was and wasn’t.

Book is well worth the read...even if you have already seen the show.

Really enjoyed this show and ultimately I think was more satisfied with it than The Night Of and maybe even True Detective S1. It was just a very well done show.

I was definitely more intrigued by the children choking mystery than the death although I think it is absurd to think multiple first graders could hide something like that.

I don't think it's that absurd for children to be able to hide things from adults. I think you underestimate the kind of a child in this day and age.

I dk man. Basically 6 kids knew what was going on, there was multiple incidents, I just don't see how they would have kept it a secret.

There sure was a noticeable lack of trivia at trivia night. Should have called it Elvis & Audrey karaoke night.

In the book they had trivia as well. Madeline is excited to have Jane on her team because Jane is supposedly really good at trivia (and jigsaw puzzles....her and Tom bond over their love of jigsaws).

Madeline's affair doesn't happen in the book either.

I thought this was a completely unnecessary sub-plot.

I'm assuming they tried to make it seem like anyone could be the murderer and victim, and this added to that list, but it wasn't ever believable.

Yeah I didn't like that part of the show because I felt like it made viewers less sympathetic with her character.

Her character (flaws and all) is awesome in the book.

I wish they would have stuck to the affair being the one with Renata's husband and the French nanny, who we find out is also sleeping with a couple of the other dads at the school and is one of the fights that breaks out at trivia night.

I wish they could have shown how Celeste manages after Perry's death, especially the scene of her speaking to hospital workers about domestic violence. She uses her experience to remind them that DV has many different looks to it.

Overall though....I think they did an excellent job of bringing this book to life.

one unresolved point for me; why was reese witherspoon's husband freaking out before he went on stage and pounding vodka?

i thought he was going for some dramatic 'my wife is cheating on me' drop-the-mike moment but ended up confused after that scene occurred and he just sang. it seemed fairly obvious that he knew or suspected the truth.

I assumed he was just nervous about singing in front of all of those people
