I don't need anything fancy.

Fluke 117 is the only answer for reliability.
"Reliable" and "nothing fancy" are opposites.

I went through 3 cheap ones in 7 years before I bought a fluke and it is rock solid

If you intend to use it about once a month, just pick up one of those cheap ones for about 20 bucks at Lowes.
But if you want it to last, get a fluke

I use a Fluke 87V for work but I didn't buy it.

I have a Fluke 87 that I love but that's overkill for the OP. You can find some well reviewed meters on Amazon (like Amprobe).

This meter is badass for 12 dollars. the leads kind of suck but if you arent using it everyday it is a good unit. Ive been having one for at least 10 years and it is still going strong, probably on the same battery. Unlike a fluke it uses regular agc fuses, so if you pop a fuse you can opt to pay 10 cents for a fuse or put a piece of foil in it. who cares, it costs 12 dollars.

Ideal 61-704 but I don't think they are still in production. Fluke 323 is solid and easy to use. Cheap multimeters are cheap for a reason.

A decent Kline from Home Depot will do.
Fluke is great and the standard though.

To me, nothing cheap when you putting your life on the line to something you can't see. Buy a good one.

I got a Klein from Home Depot and it is more then enough for a home owner. I have several of the mid range ones from Harbor Freight and they work in a pinch. For a DIYer the Harbor Freight ones work fine.

That's the worst advice I have ever heard on this forum. The fuse is there to protect the user. Damn good way to die.

The fuse is to protect the meter. Dont be stupid.

Klein 200 for about $50 has done everything around the house and auto's I have needed as a DIY homeowner.
I use a Fluke 87 at work. It is probably a better meter, but the cost is about 3x as well.

I got a Fluke 77 in the mid 90's. It has done everything that I ever needed. It is uncomplicated and, while I don't use it often, is always ready.
