I've seen some of you posting Bill Clinton's comments on this from the 90's, this is interesting as well. They both sound like liberals.

Funny how a conservative like Ronald Reagan was in favor of free trade, free flow of labor, and free flow of capital unlike Trump.

All the results of which have been negative to the U.S. Time for a change.
Whats that old quote? "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results".

Do you agree that open borders and a welfare state are incompatible?
Because I think most conservatives would be more for open borders if the welfare state was ended, or at least scaled back.

True. But it's also funny how liberals opposed those things until the moment Trump was sworn in.

Under the assumption that "free trade" wouldn't be detrimental to American jobs (e.g., see Harley Davidson during Reagan's tenure), "free flow of labor" would be a welfare burden on the state and "free flow of capital" wouldn't be undercut by currency manipulation.

I will never understand this deification of Reagan that the left seems to impose on the right.
The man was a great President, but he wasn't perfect...obviously there are policies and positions that we (on the right) don't agree with, just as there are policies and positions WJC took which we do agree with.

I would gladly trade a welfare state for borders that are not as porous. You can have an immigration policy that takes in refugees and a welfare state in a global socialized economy.

The right has brought this on themselves. Listen back to the primary. Rubio said Ronald Reagan about every 5th word.
Back to the OP's point, Reagan was a great president and America (and the rest of the world) was a very different place 30 years ago.

but we don't have this
We have trade that penalizes the US
We have labor policies that penalize the US
We have monetary policies that penalize the US

This is a point all conservatives must arm themselves with when idiots start shrieking their "nation of immigrants" tripe.

Free trade only works if the parties deal in good faith and on a level playing field. Go and research the EU's EBA free trade deal with Cambodia and how its sugar trade has destroyed rural farmers, leveled villages, and led to appalling human rights violations.

Compassionate conservatism was largely debunked by Bush 43 as he showcased how counterproductive it is. If you're going to be conservative, you have to be bare knuckles about it, not weak kneed.

The likelihood of that succeeding is the same as me attempting to have an orgy with Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders in jerry world locker rooms.

Virtually every conservative thinker since the 90s has said this was Reagan's greatest frick up. It was a political move that was a giant miscalculation on his part. (there are inside information articles that talk about the political thinking behind the move, fyi)
He just turned out to be wrong, big time.

Are you saying we don't take in refugees? Because that's a lie.
We took in 892 two days after the EO. We take in refugees all the time and will continue to.

The world is a lot different now. Reagan left office almost 28 years ago
