Seems legit at first glance.
BUT...
quote:
A kindergartner's mother is suing her public school system in West Virginia, asking that it discontinue a 75-year practice of putting kids in Bible classes that violate the U.S. and state constitutions.
The woman, identified as "Jane Doe" in the federal lawsuit backed by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, says her child will be forced either to take these weekly classes at her Mercer County elementary school or face ostracism as one of the few children who don't. Her daughter is called “Jamie” in the suit.
Seems legit at first glance.
BUT...
quote:
Teresa Russell, another county schools official, told the Charleston Gazette-Mail that the Bible courses are voluntary, financed by a nonprofit group and that the system's 19 elementary and middle schools provide alternative courses at the same time.

Separation of church and stupidity. If they are voluntary she is an idiot.

She should win this one easily. It's pretty well established that religious activities on public school campuses must be student driven and outside of regular school time. The fact that they have alternate classes for those who don't want to participate tells me this is during the school day. That's not appropriate.

Is this a public, tax supported, school?

I just love a pop off that isn't even brave enough to man up and use their real name. Coward!

yes

Tax money shouldn't fund Bible study, Koran study, Scientology study, Buddhist study or any other religion in a public school.

Shouldn't be in schools, voluntary or not. If they want to learn nonsense they can do it at church.

I'm very strongly for the separation of church and state. I personally have no problem with religious studies or groups at a public school. But it should be outside regular school hours.

quote:In the OP it states that the class is financed by a non-profit group, which tells me that tax payer money isn't footing the bill on this one. At least that's what it sounds like.

If this happens during class hours she's going to win so easily.
You can have Bible Club at lunch, or before/after school. If they're doing it during instruction time I hope they get the book thrown at them.

Man, I don't believe in a God but let them have the class. It isn't a bad thing to have in schools. Just like with Santa and the Easter Bunny, parents should dictate when is the right time to tell their child. Until them let them have the class and behave because God is watching.

Just no. My taxes fund the school property, the salaries, the utilities etc. Go to church or a private religious school if that is what you want.

financed by a non-profit group,
Ah so I don't have to pay as much tax then right? Wrong

Good. If its a public school, they shouldnt have bible study as a graded course unless its in some context of history.
After school clubs, fine. Not part of the curriculum though.
