NBA Might Speed Up The End Of Games Because Of Crappy Millennial Attention Spans

NBA commissioner Adam Silver says the league has its eye on speeding up the end of games, with a focus on retaining younger fans who "have increasingly short attention spans."
Silver, speaking Thursday before the Denver Nuggets' 140-112 rout of the Indiana Pacers at London's O2 Arena, said the NBA started studying the issue last year -- specifically, the number of timeouts that are allowed in the final two minutes -- and will review it again at the end of this season.
"It's something that I know all of sports are looking at right now, and that is the format of the game and the length of time it takes to play the game," Silver said. "Obviously people, particularly millennials, have increasingly short attention spans, so it's something as a business we need to pay attention to."
One such slow finish came last Thursday when the Houston Rockets hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder in a marquee Western Conference matchup televised nationally on TNT. It took nearly nine minutes to play 24 seconds of game time.
"When the last few minutes of the game take an extraordinary amount of time, sometimes it's incredibly interesting for fans, other times it's not," Silver said. "The short answer to your question is we are going to take a fresh look at the format, specifically in the last two minutes."

9 minutes to play 24 seconds of basketball? That's pathetic.

Good. The final 2-3 minutes of a close NBA game is brutal if one team is 3-4 possessions ahead

It ain't just millenials that don't like all the time outs

This. But then they wouldn't have a specific group to pin it on.

It's not just millennials, but it was certainly funny that Silver made sure to point it out.

Right? You think old timers - aka, the original channel flippers - are sitting there watching that shite?

So his plan to retain younger fans starts with talking shite about how they can't focus?
It doesn't matter how old you are, nobody wants to see 18 FTs and 6 TOs in the last 2 minutes of a game.

Prob just need to stop letting them advance the ball to half court out of a time out.

I actually don't mind the timeouts. It increases the suspense.

This makes the came incredibly more exciting so they will not be doing that. I think they just shouldn't allow back to back timeouts if you just called one. Similar to how it's a penalty in the NFL, it should be a tech in the NBA.

The reason why last year's Game 7 was the best basketball game I've seen has everything to do with the fact that the last 3 minutes lasted 3 minutes.

This made me laugh

This, for me. Probably a function of just being accustomed to the way the end of games are strategied, though. I don't oppose speeding it up, but I really don't care either way.

its so hard to explain to women when she asks when you're coming to bed and you tell her you still got a minute left of action and 18 minutes later you're in bed.

Yep, as an original channel flipper, I wore my legs out walking to the TV flipping between 2 and 9.
Speak not about that which you know nothing.
