Smells like BS? Mother and kids built their own house by watching YouTube

An Arkansas mother who fled domestic violence with her four children has shared the incredible story of how she rebuilt her family, by building her own home by watching YouTube tutorials.
When Cara Brookins escaped her 'controlling and violent' husband in 2008, she was not only broke, she and her family felt broken.
'We had been beaten so far down, that taking some sort of leap of a cliff, there felt like there was a lot less risk of failure,' Brookins told DailyMail.com.
'Because we'd already failed so big. What had I got left to lose?'
quote:
'We could afford all the supplies so we just put it together ourselves,' she said.
'I didn't know yet how to frame a window or a door, how to snake pipes and wires through a wall or how to draw up blueprints and obtain permits. But I knew my kids, and I knew we needed this,' she wrote in her book, Rise, How a House Built a Family.
With no building experience, Brookins, 45, and her kids sat and watched hours and hours of YouTube tutorials to teach them how to construct everything.
quote:
Despite their lack of training or experience, the house still managed to pass every city building code inspection. Although she said the inspectors were surprised when they found out who was doing the building work. 'I think they thought I was crazy,' Brookin joked.
'There wasn't a single person that thought this was a good idea aside from my kids.
quote:
Brookins is also a motivational speaker and has published fiction novels including young adult, middle grade, and adult. She is also the host of the weekly Raise My Roof podcast through Macmillan Audio.
But her new book, Rise: How a House Built a Family which is released on January 24. is her first memoir.
Brookin said that initially she hadn't told anyone about the project, and certainly never planned to write about it.
'It was very private because we were very ashamed that we had got to this place,' she said. 'I didn't even tell my coworkers.

I would say if it was smaller and more modest, yes a possibility. That house, nope.

Damn this makes my 12x8 shed from doing the same thing seem not as cool.

Very possible, building a house really isn't that hard. It's just time and labor consuming. My grandfather, mother, and I (along with help from the rest of the family for large lifting days) built my grandfathers house.
We had the slab poured for us and the slab plumbing down for us only out of laziness.
ETA: Thise pictures look shopped as hell.

You can learn to do anything watching Youtube. If everyone did this I would be out of a job.

Doesn't matter. This is a you go girl, don't need a man, feel good piece of journalism. Truth is an inconvenience.

It's certainly not impossible... but yeah... definitely smells fishy.

You can learn to do a lot no doubt. I have no doubt in my mind though that this woman did not build that house from watching youtube videos.

I'm sure there are things she didn't do alone. Slab work, masonry, roofing, etc.
I have no doubt that she did most of the design work as that's one of the ugliest homes I've ever seen.

Probably did the finish work herself. Church, etc probably helped her line subs up to do the difficult parts, SR, electrical, roofing, etc. Her and her son didn't do all of it.

Single mother with 3 kids and "broke" but has the money to build a got damn house from the ground up...yeah I don't think so.
Also how convenient that after finally getting her life back on track and stable again she puts out a book. And I mean why would anyone read it anyway, we already know the entire plot.

I think I'd listen if she'd give me a hummer....

if true then good for her. However, that's a huge house for her and the kids to build.

Clean shoes and clean pants. It's either the first cinder block or the only cinder block. You decide.

As I'm reading the story, I'm thinking "ok, maybe they put together a simple raised 1000sh house with some vinyl siding..... that would be nice and probably do'able..."
Then I got to the pictures and see that and spit coffee all over my phone!
