From Rowing the Boat to Building a Dam!

The deal is for five years, according to a source, though the value not known yet. It is likely to at least triple the $800,000 in base salary he was making at Western Michigan.

At Minnesota, Fleck will have some mending to do. Many players were very unhappy with the firing of second-year coach Tracy Claeys, and some have threatened to transfer. Recruits, too, are starting to bail.

Fleck will have to work quickly to stabilize things and keep the talent that has put the Gophers in five consecutive bowl games.

He refused to talk to other schools until after the bowl - and it cost him. Hes stuck with whats open now (Minn) or roll the dice on another great season and see whats open next year.

My guess is he is only at Minn for 3 years, max. Either fizzle out and get fired, or do great and takes a job at a much bigger football school.

I guess he felt he peaked with an undefeated regular season and didn't think another year would help his stock. At least he's in a P5 conference and can go from there.

Yep, and he loses a good portion of senior leadership from his team. Most people think, "just stay at your current job, have another undefeated season and get a better job." It isn't that simple. This year's team was built for massive success. Next year's WMU team is not.

Good for Fleck and Minnesota. I think he's the right guy for that whole athletic department right now.

He's at the worst place though. Minny is a shite show and the players don't even want to play.

They'll play for fleck. Motivating kids is probably his best attribute as a coach

Brand new stadium.
Brand new coach with national sports media appeal/coverage.

Minnesota is getting the better end of this deal in the short run. Tickets will now sell. Pep rallies will be packed. Hell, he will probably even give their hockey team pregame speeches (don't knock NCAA hockey, especially up North. It's bigger than baseball at many schools that have it). Heck, Minnesota is now going to find themselves on nationally televised ESPN games more often. Granted, it'll be the noon kickoffs, but they will have more exposure than before.

Fleck wins in the long run. He either fizzles & wins just enough while earning triple what he does now OR he proves himsel in years 2-3 & bolts to a real P5.

Why is everyone shitting on Minnesota? If Iowa, MSU, and Wisconsin can win conference titles and go to Rose Bowls I see no reason why Minnesota can't.

Plus, Minny is a great city and they have a brand new stadium. He certainly could have done worse

Because the players have openly stated they don't trust or believe the current administration

His failure will be swift, and he will not be heard from again.

Both the university and Fleck made poor decisions.

You seeing what's going on out there right now? It's not the greatest situation to walk into.
