Why is everyone shitting on Minnesota? If Iowa, MSU, and Wisconsin can win conference titles and go to Rose Bowls I see no reason why Minnesota can't.
Plus, Minny is a great city and they have a brand new stadium. He certainly could have done worse
(1) Minnesota's history of hiring/firing coaches after Lou Holtz left is abysmal. The administration has always been terrible. Some Gophers fans are ecstatic about this hire, while others are cautiously-optimistic.
(2) Minnesota hired a coach not too long ago that has a much-better track record of turning around programs and even he couldn't elevate Minnesota anywhere near the level of Wisconsin, though I give him credit for taking Minnesota out of the cellar.
(3) Since Jerry Kill arrived, Minnesota has poured plenty of resources into marketing the football program without much return. Minnesota just had its best season, in terms of number of wins (9) since 1905. They struggled to generate any interest in a city that cares about the Vikings come fall. Admittedly, P.J. Fleck has a bit more "flair" than Kill.
(4) Brand new stadium gets taken over by Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin fans for home games.
(5) Now that the Tracy Claeys saga is over, the Board of Regents are focusing their efforts on assessing the futures of Mark Coyle and Eric Kaler. It's not like the administration is in a stable position.
------------
Now, Minnesota is currently developing its Athletes Village, which is a $166 million complex being funded wholly through private donations. Those donations have mostly stalled out around $80 million. We'll see what happens with the donations now that P.J. Fleck is in.
One thing is for sure: Fleck is an upgrade over Tracy Claeys.

They'll play for fleck. Motivating kids is probably his best attribute as a coach
The talk of mass transfers is just butthurt BS. The players not being that good is bigger problem.

Why would he make this move?
Set up to fail and he was on cusp of big time job.

Sounds like Fleck needs to clean up some roster space to make room for some non-wannabe-activist players.

If fleck can clean up this mess he deserves the Bama job

My guess is he is only at Minn for 3 years, max. Either fizzle out and get fired, or do great and takes a job at a much bigger football school.
Well the good thing about this job if he does well, even the idiots that think he's "nothing special" won't be able to deny that he is, and he'll be in line for any open job he wants.
I have to admire someone that is betting on himself. That is what you're doing when you take this type of job. He's saying he doesn't need a perfect situation to thrive.

He's at the worst place though. Minny is a shite show and the players don't even want to play.
I can think of many worse places. Don't get to high with the highs in life and too low with the lows in life. Fleck can recruit his stomping ground and his biggest competition is Wisconsin in his division.

Well Miles can finally go and get that coaching job in Michigan!

Wow...Huge get for Minnesota, he could be their Dan Mullen.
On an unrelated note- I know a coach with history in the state who in his last 4 seasons has coached the offense which won 3 Division 1 Conference and 1 National Titles who might be into that WMU opening....#GetNusstoKZoo!

So Minnesota made a better coaching hire than LSU.

I heard the press conference watch the local tv news and listened to talk radio and read the sportswriter today.
Fleck will win at Minnesota. Will he go to Rose Bowls? That remains to be seen, but he will have winning seasons and take on Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska in the West. He will go to some Big Ten title games.
I can see Fleck out-recruiting and beating Wisconsin regularly.

He owes Alabama after being on the field in 2003 when Northern Illinois knocked off Shula's first Alabama team.

The right coach (possibly Fleck) should be able to do well at Minnesota. Heck all time, they have the same number of national titles (7) as Michigan State (6), Iowa (1), and Wisconsin (0) combined.

I don't know that those claimed National Championships from the 1930s and 1940s have any actual impact today.

Fleck will win at Minnesota.
P.J. Fleck is a salesman, and has always said the things necessary to rally a fan base. Even before Minnesota hired Fleck, I said that I am not sold that this approach would work long-term at a P-5 school.

Been hearing this for quite some time now. The best part about this coaching hire is the immediate reaction from Gopher fans turning their attention to Wisconsin. The two programs are in different stratospheres.
