ESPN can only make around $25 million airing this wild card game.
Why?

Feels like something is missing.

Why are they capped at $25mil that they can make on this game?
Because Clay Travis is a shitty writer who WOULD write an article that doesn't answer the most important question in the article.

Yeah it's kinda dumb of them not to sell advertising during the ABC simulcast. Will be weird to watch 3 minutes of black screen after punts.

idk, the deal is pretty recent I think. They didn't start showing wild cars games until like 2015.
Money was definitely flowing when they renegotiated the 1.9bil deal in 2011

I wouldn't care if ESPN went out. It's time for someone new and fresh to run sports on TV.

I can never understand if those of yal saying this stuff are just so butthurt you can't see straight or are like 15 years old.

Do I think most of their shows are painful? Yes. Do I wish they had less influence on the leagues and their perceptions? Yes. However, do I really want things to return to the pre-ESPN days? Not even maybe.

Yal have no clue what it was like pre-ESPN. Do you want two local games plus one national game every college football Saturday? Do you want the number of highlights we get to be akin to the number of highlights we get for the Olympics?

ESPN's content sucks but the progress they've made for live coverage of sports has been incredible.

With the amount of ads they show the SEC should start charging them more

Yeah the SEC is getting screwed by CBS. The SEC should get more.

I wish it was 750 million. That network is killing sports in America

Does CBS get the best ROI from their sports telecasts? They seem to be pretty selective, but hit on some consistently watched events:

SEC game of the week
NFL
March Madness (though they don't cover the Final Four anymore)
The Masters

Not a ton of quantity, but great quality

This is the 2011 deal. The wild card kicker just started the last few years.

Oh ok. so was it kept secret then? Because when the 2011 deal happened people were laughing at the fact that they were paying that much more money than cbs/nbc/fox and not even getting a playoff game

The NFL assigns ESPN the worst wild card game in the worst time slot on the worst day possible and then decides whether or not it wants to take the $100 million each year. That is, ESPN doesn't even get to choose whether it wants to air the game or not. The NFL just says, "You're airing it, give us $100 million."

This is why Goodell is still around.

Re the comment as to ESPN losing money. Consider that Mike Greenberg makes $6.5M a year.

Why? Why on earth would they do this?
1. They have the money to do it.
2. They are trying to maintain a foothold in the NFL and deny other networks.
3. They need to remain a must-have cable option to rake in all of those subscriptions fees throughout the year.

One step back, several billion steps forward.

It's been gone over many times here. They greatly overpaid for pretty much every single deal w/a pro sports league b/c they (A) wanted to cock block the other sports channels and (B) b/c they idiotically assumed cable/sat subs would keep growing instead of getting slashed by cord cutters who DGAF about sports.

Maybe they wouldn't have to let everyone go if they actually made better business decisions.

as long as His & Hers sticks around, I am fine with this.

I hope they change the name to something less offensive like "Theirs" though.

They still do, CBS switches with TBS every other year as part of their deal with Turner Sports.

It is amazing to me that the NFL paraded around as a not-for-profit organization for 40 years before going to for-profit a few years ago. Just think about that. They got NFP tax benefits while signing deals like this.
