Why? Why on earth would they do this?
Feels like something is missing.

Why are they capped at $25mil that they can make on this game?

I've been wondering overall what happens when the tv market crashes and the people that don't watch sports won't have to pay for ESPN. I don't think it happens soon but in 20 years I can see athletes make less money than they do today counting inflation.

I don't think they're capped. I think it's estimates based on time slot and match-up

One more fun fact: ESPN pays $100 million to air the last pick of the four Wild Card games every year.

Gotcha. Maybe it's poorly worded in the article where it says "ESPN can make $25million"

I guess my other questions would be:

1. Is it solely based on the matchup...meaning do they normally make revenues over $100mil and profit from this matchup?

2. What do the other, top 3 matchups sell for?

Putting this wild card cost into context, the best deal in televised sports right now is CBS's to carry the top game in the SEC every week. CBS pays $55 million a year for this right, or an average of $3.5 million per game. This means that the SEC title game, which is also included in this package, costs $96.5 million less than the NFL Wild Card game on ESPN. And that the entire SEC on CBS package costs $45 million less than the single NFL wild card game airing on ESPN

They'll just raise ticket prices at that overrated Disneyland like they always do. Isn't it like a Bill to get in there now?

I wouldn't care if ESPN went out. It's time for someone new and fresh to run sports on TV.

With the amount of ads they show the SEC should start charging them more

yeah the games themselves don't make that much, but in ESPN's case the goal is to add viewership (more subscriptions) as a result of their deal. So it's hard to quantity the overall impact. But it's safe to say that with cord cutting taking over, it wasn't a good bet

When the deal was made, money was flowing...

quote:

You can see where the NFL stands. It can command a $100 million per year pricetag because the viewership for its games is tops among sports. The least viewed Wild Card game back in January commanded 27.6 million people and that would top the biggest audience in cable television history which was the 2011 BCS Championship on ESPN which garnered 27.3 million viewers.

The worst broadcast wild card game is bigger than any cable event. ESPN was shooting for broadcast figures but it ain't happening.

If it's paid for by ESPN but per the deal also simulcasting on ABC, all of the expenses should not be hitting ESPN.
