Watching Empire Strikes Back last night

Such brilliance. The acting was top notch and Ford was in his prime
A question I always had though- When Vader landed on Hoth and went after the Millenium Falcon and missed, why didn't they go after all the rebels still on the base?
Luke and his buddies were all kind of half assing around to take off and Vader could have wiped them all out.
Plus, why couldn't Vader sense Luke a few hundred yards away?

I don't know why people keep telling themselves this.

Because it's one of the very few SW movies where the characters acted like real people. Like people you might know, normal feelings and banter.
I don't know what the Prequel people were...Half robots, a strain of human DNA that never originated from Earth? As if everyone in that Universe has Anhedonia.
TFA was better on that front but still detached, cheerless, somewhat loveless, lacking wit and vital human characteristics and traits to our normal degree.
So when ppl say great acting, it's because they're acting like us...How we talk and behave now...Fight, quarrel, be impetuous, grumpy, sarcastic, happy, cheerful, grateful, normal, scared, etc.
( Remember the trash compactor scene in a New Hope complaing about the smell and arguing about whose fault it is and blaming each other and how they whooped and cheered to be alive? If that's in any other SW movie but the originals, the characters would say stoicly and robotically say..."the machine has stopped, we must depart post haste."
And that's a welcomed shock.

Overall yes the characters act like real people in the originals. There was a total lack of real ness in the prequels. But I will say The banter between Han and Leia at the beginning of Empire, where he's telling her how much she loves him, is awkward to me. And then when Leia kisses Luke it's just painful. None of that felt natural either.

Yeah, he should have done a more thorough sweep, but once he realized Han's hyperdrive was out, he was the obvious target to get Luke to do his bidding. Vader had no real collateral on Luke before then.

I'll probably get downvoted and corrected to oblivion by people who know more about the production than I, but the Luke-Leia angle in both ANH and at the beginning of ESB tells me that Lucas didn't have the story fleshed out and forced in the bit about Leia being Luke's sister late in the game while either writing or shooting ESB.
In ANH, Luke had a huge crush on Leia, talked about how beautiful she was, and obsessed over rescuing her. Even as they're escaping from the Death Star after the rescue, Han makes a comment about the possibility of a "girl like that and a guy like me" and Luke sort of jealously shoots it down.
When you take that into account with the kiss at the beginning of ESB, I feel like Lucas had an "aha!" moment during the late states of the production of ESB - too late to reshoot that scene - and forced it in.

The dialogue was a little better, but it still felt forced when Han turned to Chewy and said, "Just wait'll the empire strikes back."

3PO is the best comic relief character in the series.

Empire is on another tier from the rest of the series.
Its a masterpiece and one of the greatest sequels of all time.

Not just the best Star Wars movie but one of the best movies ever made imo.

Empire is the best.
the critical success of empire has helped the series continue to grow, and overcome mistakes(prequels).
if it was a bad movie then I doubt the franchise gets as much love as it does today. Disney definitely does not get involve to carry it into a new generation.

And to think when it came out in 1980, it got kind of mixed reviews critically.

This post is basically stolen from the honest trailer for Empire Strikes Back.
Lucas did not direct or write the screen play the best movie in Star Wars. I think this is not a coincidence.
It is clear that he did not have the Luke and Leia brother sister thing. Even when he has the outcome (Original Trilogy) fleshed out he fricks up the details in the backstory (the prequels).
Even the books and games do a better job in filling in the details. Thrawn trilogy and Knights of the Old Republic.
To me, Lucas's vision is best told by other people. Lucas tends to frick up the details and throws in Ewoks and Jar Jar.

quote:How about, why is any of the shite on Hoth happening? Why do the walkers exist? That cannot be the most efficient way to get across the terrain. Who would have the foresight to design a speeder that has a little harpoon with a tow cable on the back of it? What other use would that have?
A question I always had though- When Vader landed on Hoth and went after the Millenium Falcon and missed, why didn't they go after all the rebels still on the base?
This is why I can't take Empire people too seriously. There's too much stupid shite going on in this movie. You people are governed by your hatred of George Lucas.

I don't either.
Other than the misuse of Forest Whitaker, the acting in R1 was lightyears better than any previous Star Wars film. ESB had some great moments, but the acting was only slightly better than the original Star Wars. And I still say that having a muppet voiced by Frank Oz as a main character was a huge fricking mistake.

Maybe, but there's this quote from ESB:
quote:
Obi-Wan: "That boy is our last hope."
Yoda: "No...there is another..."
So either Lucas knew that Leia was Luke's sister all along, or he had something else in mind when he wrote this and changed his mind later.
