BR Magnet HS or Lee Magnet HS? - Update

My son is in 8th grade at a private school in Baton Rouge. He has been going to the school since pre-K and we planned to let him graduate from there. In the last year there have been many changes at the school so we have decided to leave and let him go to high school somewhere else. He has requested that we let him go somewhere else and we agree. We are trying to get into University High but that will be difficult. I am also going to apply to either BR High or the new Lee High (both magnet schools) as a back up plan. I am also considering other private schools in the area.
My son is a straight A student and has already taken the ACT in 8th grade. I am sure he will succeed wherever he goes. I would like the OT's feedback on BR High and the new Lee High.
Update...We received the acceptance letter to BRMHS today.

Episcopal? Dunham? CLA? Which private school he coming from? Those three are k-12 off top of the head.

this is very anecdotal, but everyone I met at LSU that went to BR high were pretty damn good students.

BR High. Lee High has always been trash.

Would be great to have him take AP classes in HS so he would start as a sophomore in college

I would not send my kid to Lee High. Never.

We are also applying to high schools and I have toured the new Lee High. The facility is state of the art, the kids are polite and seem very interested in their education. With that said, we are trying to get our daughter into the Academy or U High. The community around Lee High has not embraced it and our child would have nothing in common with kids that attend Lee.

I had heard (but was unsure) you could not apply to both schools, had to choose one or the other. Is that correct ?
Lee will eventually have baseball and basketball, if that is an interest

Why in the world would anyone take the ACT in middle school?

BR high will be very academically challenging
Lee will be less and its a new school. lot of kinks to be worked out. Lee will have a basketball team.
What kind of kids does your son hang out with?
BRMHS and Lee will have more nerdy Asian kids , weird white kids, and a mix of black kids. If he is into sports, dont send him here. If he is a normal, all american boy, dont send him to either of these places. Catholic might work

Baton Rouge High would be first choice, Lee would be second. I wouldn't hesitate to put my kid at Lee, but BRH has a proven reputation. I think in the future Lee will be a really good school too though.
From what I have heard there are some things offered at Lee that BRH doesn't seem to have, like the digital arts program and robotics. I think there are more traditional art/theater/music classes available at BRH.
BTW, magnet applications are due December 5, so make the decision for 1st choice/2nd choice quickly.

I have two at BRHMS now and a third headed there next year. We had been at Parkview Baptist (academic joke-nice people) and for one year in Ascension. My daughter was student of the year for her primary school, so that eased her path into the Magnet program in Baton Rouge. A common path is Westdale Heights Academic Magnet, Sherwood Middle Magnet and then BRMHS.
BRMHS is a really great school and if your kid is bright you want to send him there. Camp out at the EBRPSS and annoy them. It's worth it if you have a really bright one . They will challenge him. Downside-LOTS of homework and projects.
My oldest is average in her peer group at BRMHS and she has the Honors TOPS award at LSU and killing it by my standards. She's nothing special compared to a lot of these kids though-there are kids every year going to the Ivy Leagues, the military academies, Cal Tech, MIT, Stanford etc. So many bright and ambitious kids.
I have great hope for Lee High. I would not hesitate to apply. I don't think they are going to really tolerate any crap so I wouldn't worry about it being a bad environment. More like Real Life 101-wkids that are coming from working class families. I would not expect it to be as good as BRMHS academically, but still really good. It's an impressive place and I now they are really trying hard over there to attract some good, smart kids.
Good luck. Shake the haters. The magnet program is very solid.

I went to BRHS in 9th grade before moving out of state. I wish my future kid would have the opportunity to go to a school like that. I don't think there's anything close to BRHS in Jackson/Madison area.

Send him to Catholic if he isn't a nerd (not that there's anything wrong with that).
