Well LA has the jungle primary in which all of the Republican candidates were more interested in staying in the mud of Vitter's sex life rather than focusing on the issues so that we could accomplish what the LA GOP has done for years......letting the people pick the best Republican candidate and then getting behind him in the runoff. Vitter then went to the mud and this basically fractured the party in the runoff.
The other major factor was the wolf in sheep's clothing, Jay Dardenne. This guy ran as a republican, got in the mud on Vitter like I said, then when Vitter made it into the runoff instead of himself he sold out to JBE for untold amounts of cash and a sweet gig as Commissioner of Administration under Edwards.
All of that plus trial lawyer money is how LA has a democrat as a governor.

David Vitter had too much baggage. JBE caught lightning in a bottle and had no real challenger. Don't think that will be the case next election.

Actually all bullshitting aside.
Louisiana is a RED state nationally, but most voters don't give a shite about local politics. I mean they will complain but they don't give enough of a frick to vote unless it's a nation election. Louisiana governors election are on off cycles from presidential election. This greatly benefits the Blue inner cities of Louisiana. If the governors election were held on 11/8 They'd be fricked and they know it.

I'll throw my two cents in:
1. LA isn't as conservative as you might think. It is very socially and culturally conservative (christian, anti-abortion, pro gun, patriotic) but honestly not very fiscally conservative. That's partially because we are a poor state and the legacy of the Longs.
2. Under Jindal, taxes got cut quite a bit (I used passive voice for reason). Plus post-katrina money went away and oil prices dropped. Rather than rebalance the budget (or god forbid, undo the tax cuts) he did some cutting and implemented a lot of efficiencies, but he mostly used a lot of gimmicks. That plus looking like he cared more about president than governor made him relatively unpopular.
3. JBE was best suited to capitalize on 1 and 2. He was the democratic floor leader under Jindal so his "anti-Jindal credentials were impeccable. Vitter wasn't exactly pro-Jindal, but it wasn't as clear. JBE also fit the social conservative but not fiscally conservative mold with his west point/honor code/pro-gun/pro life image. At least compared to scandal ridden Vitter. Several liberal reporters disingenuously played up the "I can't even tell he is a democrat!" angle.
4. Lastly, Vitter is a jerk (allegedly). He went after the two over republicans (Dardenne and Angele) harshly enough that Angele refused to support Vitter and Dardenne actually endorsed JBE. Vitter's logic was "I want to get in a run-off with the democrat I can beat so I will attack the other republicans." Made sense at the time. But you add on the Vitter supposedly rubbed people the wrong way on an interpersonal level and you get republicans abandoning Vitter.

Louisiana suddenly became such a moral state, especially Democrats and some in the middle, that people couldn't vote for a guy that fricked up 15 years ago and apologized for it, with no even hint of similar acts since.
Plus, despite incredible experience and qualifications, probably the highest/most that's ever run for the office, Vitter was kinda oddball in person and had also made a lot of enemies on the right over the years.

Apparently some people in Louisiana would rather be screwed by a guy who was in the Army rather than vote for a guy who screws hookers.

I did not. Vitter was a piece of shite, but he'd have had pull which would've benefitted the state but I don't think Edwards has been a bad governor objectively. Jindal fricked this state so hard.

Because not everyone is a democrat or republican and they vote for who they think is the best candidate. Vitter was a horrible candidate and Edwards ran as a moderate(even though I never believed he was) which won him the election.
