“He’s going to get his hands up on top of the snapper and push him toward the ground,” Blandino said of Broncos defensive end Jared Crick. “That’s legal. Open-hand push, legal. If there was a grab and a push, that would be defensive holding.

“This is a similar concept as an offensive lineman blocking a defensive lineman, if he can get up on top of that defensive player and push him toward the ground, [that’s] legal, versus grabbing and pulling him.”

As for if safety Will Parks stepped out of bounds on his return down the sideline, Blandino emphasized that an angle down the sideline would have made it easier to review the play. Since there was not conclusive evidence to overturn the ruling, the call on the field stood.

Consider the controversy settled.

For a while, I thought the constant on special teams with long snappers is you couldn't touch the snapper period. But it's ok to push them down?

if the NFL is saying that pushing the snapper down to jump over him is legal then the Saints better be doing it every field goal attempt against them the rest of the year. something tells me the flags will start to fly though

Super weird explanation. How does this not open itself up for absurd extremes. I can just stand up straight right over the center who is crouched down and has his head between his legs. Then, the instant he snaps it I can just smash my hands down on him but "because I got on top of him" (which no shite because he's got his head between his legs and I'm standing up) it's legal?

If that is the true interpretation of the rule, then it's a terrible rule.

Have a feeling this rule will be getting tweaked in the offseason.

Yea, who saw this coming.

By rule it could have been called illegal contact or defensive holding.

quote:

ARTICLE 6. DEFENSIVE HOLDING. It is a foul for defensive holding if: (a) a defensive player tackles or holds any opponent other than a runner, except as permitted in Article 5 (b) during a punt, field goal attempt, or Try-kick attempt, B1 grabs and pulls an offensive player out of the way, allowing B2 to shoot the gap (pull-and-shoot) in an attempt to block the kick, except if B1 is advancing toward the kicker Note: Any offensive player who pretends to possess the ball, and/or one to whom a teammate pretends to give the ball, may be tackled until he crosses the line of scrimmage between the tackles of a normal tight offensive line. Penalty: For defensive holding: Loss of five yards and an automatic first down.
ARTICLE 7. ILLEGAL USE OF HANDS BY DEFENSE. It is a foul if a defensive player thrusts his hands or arms forward above the frame of an opponent to contact him on the neck, face, or head. Note: Contact in close-line play that is not direct and forcible is not a foul.

The guys holding down the long snapper never appear to make an advancement towards the ball. The four turnovers cost the saints the game though. If the game comes down to whether an official makes the call or not, then you didn't play well enough to win the game.

I think I can sum this thread up nicely.

Senior VP of Officiating: It was technically legal and not a flag
Saints Fans: You're wrong

It appears given the letter of the rule to be a legal play.

But it makes no sense.

If you touch the long snapper while leaping, it's called leverage and is a penalty. (hard to leap over a guy who is not shoved down and not touch him).

If someone other than the leaper shoves the center down, and the guy leaps, it's ok.

Makes no sense. I guess this will get changed in the offseason.

Credit the broncos for knowing the rule book.
