5% of vehicles are sold with a manual transmission, and this article about 18% of Americans being able to drive them is supposed to be shocking?

Am I missing something here?

I drove one for 7 years. Loved it 75% of the time. The other 25% was the times spent on on-ramps in BR traffic when some jackass would pull right behind me. Had to burn rubber everytime.

A new report shows fewer Americans own a car with manual transmission let alone know how to operate one. And there appear to be a number of reasons for it.

And not a single reason was included in the article

My grandfather told me when I was 14 that was gonna learn to drive and automatic for my first vehicle. He said after that you will never forget.

Sure enough, I have known how since then. I'm glad I learned

I'm in the minority again. I have decided to consider myslef a member of Generation Y rather than Millennial due to the fact that I share NONE of their stereotypical characteristics.

Ever driven in a country where they drive on the left? The cars have the steering column on the right and a stick.
* I had to drive on a side of the street I wasn't used to
* I had to drive from the side of the car I wasn't used to
* I had to work the stick with my left hand

My manual Tacoma gets worse gas mileage than its automatic counterpart. Don't care though, shifting through the gears in 4Lo is glorious.

this is actually how I learned to drive a stick, in Thailand

luckily the shift pattern is actually the same and not reversed as you would think, so first gear is still the top left

The ability to heel-toe can be greatly affected by the pedal box and the size of your foot. In my car, it's easier to "side step" instead of heal toe. I can press the brake with the left side of my foot and blip the throttle with the right side. Works great.

I learned how to drive on a stick shift 1984 Toyota 4x4 (that's still in the family and running) but I have only had to do it a few times since.

That truck had a tricky as frick clutch, every car I've driven that was a standard was far easier.

I think it's more of a novelty at this point. Most professional rock crawling or off-road drivers, even in Jeeps, will tend to use the automatic. The computers in my Manual make it ridiculously easy for someone to learn with features like hill start assist and decent control.
